Looked like just being a case of the more versatile Wilson being preferred, so he could flood the rest of the bench with attackers?
Hard to see him starting a league game any time soon. He can't be happy being back-up for the back-up.

Absolute disgrace that he wasn't on the bench ahead of Wilson.
He was hands down our best defender at Luton whilst Wilson and Bardsley went walkies for the goal.

Guess what ....

Why is it strange? He was our best defender on the night and we've rewarded someone for switching off, getting wrong side of his man whilst we conceded a goal, whilst one bloke who made one error in 120 minutes of football is punished for nothing. I hope he's injured in that respect.

So he's a better defender and a better option to call on when needed? Hughes has always managed fair and square here. You play well. You get the shirt regardless of historical form or stature. He's picked a player who let a 4th division forward get goal side of him and dropped a player who made just one error in 120 minutes of football. His previous performance against Liverpool saw him win every aerial challenge against Benteke. I'm sorry Rob, but Hughes has got off with a lot today due to the nature of the game and the goings on. I expect better.

I expect better. I don't agree with your assessment of Wollscheid on Tuesday. First half he looked jittery and had a knack for passing it into touch under no pressure. I agree that Hughes seems to have worryingly stopped picking the team on form but in my opinion that doesn't apply to Wollscheid. I think Wilson's versatility was probably a factor too.

I'm surprised Wolly was up for the move over the summer, regardless of why we were. It wasn't looking great for him even when last season ended.
Just a really, really odd one all 'round.

It's about being fair to players in the squad. Something Hughes has always done...massively to his credit. He's stopped doing it though. Why pick Wollscheid for a game where he makes one real mistake yet his partner costs us a goal and he's picked for the squad for the next game? What message is it sending to the lad? He's persecuted Arnautovic for a performance that was in line with a lot of the side that night yet picked Afellay in a position that he blatantly can't play. Play him in central midfield or not at all IMO. Again, what is that telling that lad and what message is it sending to the rest of the squad? If you want to drop Arnautovic then fine, but bring in someone who can do a better job. The same applies to the rest of the squad. Hughes has done nothing short of a magnificent job here but he's done it on the back of fair management. He's on a sticky wicket if he changes that tack IMO.

I'm with Rob on his performance vs Luton, I thought it left a lot to be desired and he was dire like the rest of them. He doesn't deserve to be on the bench over Wilson because Wilson is the better CB and more versatile. He has persecuted Arnie, I think that was wrong. I blame Hughes for today, there's no way Affelay and Adam should start the game and I wouldn't have started Cameron either (at fault for another goal). So far I think Hughes has been the weak link for us this season it has to be said. But on not having Wolly in the squad he was completely correct.

I've got a feeling this topic might be the focus of one of your five points, Rob? It's not this week actually looky - feel like I've covered it. As others have said, the silver lining is that the red cards might see the manager stumble across his best team in the way his predecessor used to.
