Why did Affelay and Adam even start? I just don't get it! Arnie and Ireland had to start, no hindsight or any of that bollocks, he just had to. You can't foresee their idiocy but neither should have been on the pitch anyway. Absolutely fucking infuriating!

Sod knows, not sure what Ireland has to do to get a start, saying that he should get one now, I'm not at all sure what Afellay is these days, no way a winger anyway.

Afellay and MVG in midfield does not work! Unbelievable that Hughes cannot see this.

Affelay has been toss for us so far and clearly isn't a winger and can't cope with the physicality (as he showed today), there's no way in a million years he should have been anywhere near the side today. Ireland's been our best attacker, he should have started.

I was just about to start a new "blessing in disguise' thread. I think Hughes has been struggling with team selections and trying to keep everyone involved. The one silver lining from today's match is that he won't try and shoehorn Affelay in and Ireland should finally get to start in the middle. Bojan can then be eased in off the bench too. Sometimes it takes a bit of luck when dropping on your best side. It should be pretty much nailed on that Arnie, Ireland and Shaq will be the attacking 3 midw with Bojan coming on for Ireland in the next couple of games. Hopefully if they do a good job then Affelay and Adam will have to sit it out until the others play themselves out of the side.

Hughes said after that Arnie's last 2 performances didn't warrant a starting place but he did very well today when he came on.Must agree about Affelay though because at the minute i'm really struggling to see what he offers us.

Adam scares me every time he plays even though I like him and it was very harsh.

I think deep down Hughes knows his best side but he was trying to shoehorn his new signings into the frame. I think the Afellay ban will prove to be a blessing. I don't expect him to return to the 1st XI after his ban and he will have to bide his time. At the moment he is just not good enough.

Which is fair enough if we have another left winger and if he wasn't 1 of 10 against Luton who were absolutely fucking dreadful.

I can understand the logic behind that. However what exactly has Affelay done to warrant his continued place in the team? When I saw the teams i was annoyed that Arnie had been dropped, as there was no like for like replacement & no one who deserves to replace him.

Afellay on the wing instead of Arnie and Van Ginkel with Adam... and Glenn covering... think about it. Weird setup. Ireland has been in majestical form why is he not starting?

Van Ginkel has to stay in the side, other than that's the team that has to play. Geoff dropped another bollock today, Wilson in.

Sparky's team selection so far this season has been poor. His failure to play Ireland and to play Adam/Van Ginkle/Affelay is the forward midfield role is puzzling. Especially when you consider the excellent performance of Ireland off the bench vs Spurs.
While I'll admit Ireland isn't likely to produce a piece of match winning brilliance like Bojan and Adam. He does offer a lot of fluidity to the midfield compared to Adam. He has this ability to keep us ticking over which helps us keep the pressure on the opposition. Which makes his exclusion all the more confusing.

The two reds pretty much eliminate the midfield selection dilemna. Could they be a blessing in disguise?

Arnie was shocking against Luton,, didn't look remotely interested, he deserved to be dropped, and given the impact he had when he did come on, it was the right decision. He needs to know that he's not a guaranteed starter if he slacks off. As for Adam, he was having a good game and looked like our biggest threat until he was sent off. Thought Hughes got everything right yesterday, selection wise.
