Yesterday driving on A303 to Yeovilton a Mercedes ahead of me appeared to have no number plate. As I got closer the numbers suddenly appeared on the plate. Thinking about this there are 3 possibilities 1. My eyesight is shite ( the Mrs also noticed the plate so doubt it's this) 2. Somehow the numbers can't be read from a certain distance to avoid ANPR. 3. The driver can switch his number plate on and off to avoid car park/congestion charges and other services that read your number plate automatically.
Anybody seen or heard of 2 or 3 above?

I've read about plates like these, and it sounds like they have become more effective. Problem is, that extra effectiveness will just get the drive pulled over, quicker. They are illegal.

I know you can get a spray or even stickers that reflect light back, but to the naked eye they seem normal, maybe sun's reflection made them invisible. invisible-number.com/

google plate flippers, or there is a DIY job on a spring that you can use.. they are not illegal to have on your car either as people use them when they take their cars to shows.
Obviously using them on the road is illegal and could hand you in hot water.. I have my front plate to the side of my passenger seat, as for some reason it fell off and i have not got round to fixing it.
