With the current squad, how is Mark Hughes going to address our apparent weakness of defending set pieces?
Even with Shawcross fit and N'Zonzi in the squad last season we struggled to defend set plays, this weekend we go up against a master of set pieces in Tony Pulis, so what's the plan..?!

Stop giving away needless free-kicks. Put a man on BOTH posts on corners.

Its pretty easy Whelan and Pieters on the posts , rest man marking according to height The majority of our team are still 6ft plus

And to be sharper/more alive to the second ball. We'll clear it and then switch off.

Call me old fashioned but I don't see what's wrong with man-marking. We still seem to go in for this fuzzy half and half bollocks.

Call me old fashioned but I don't see what's wrong with man-marking. We still seem to go in for this fuzzy half and half bollocks. this. Zone marking is static. When teams get free headers it's because they are finding the seams between the zones. By the time a team has taken two or three corners against us they know the weak spots. If we stick to 100% man marking the defender has a better chance of preventing their mark from getting to a dangerous spot.

You can train all you like at set pieces, man mark, zonal mark and all the rest of that bollocks, but sometimes defending comes down to brute strength, a desire to get to the ball first, good aerial ability and also a natural instinct in getting into the right position. unfortunately our current crop of defenders are lacking in most of the aforementioned skills.
Can we stop with this obsession with buying wingers and rebuild the Berlin wall - please Mr Hughes

Drop Sidwell, mark the posts, sign taller players and man mark.

If everybody in the crowd simultaneously blows as hard as possible, the ball might move and put off the set piece taker.

Man City couldn't defend set pieces either when LMH was manager.
The solution is to bring in a coach who knows how to defend set pieces even if that means one of LMH's friends seeking pastures new.

According to this we are now 6th in the height table (#We're not tallest any more#) and the Baggies are. So this weekend play Crouch and and Cameron even if it makes us slower up top. Bring Diouf on for the last 10 mins and we'll still score more than they have in the previous 80.

Defenders who don't ballwatch
Even otherwise good defenders e.g. Pieters have a real isue with ball watching (Feallani goal at The Shit last season springs to mind) In fact other than Ryan every single one of our defenders is guilty of this.
Throw in the way we set up: not having a man at both posts for e.g. & we will simply continue to concede far more set piece goals than we should.
I actually think, last season especially,we generally defend very well for a side who encourages our back 4 to join in with the play. If we could just improve a bit on this (set pieces) then it would make a big difference.

Man marking rather than zone allocates each player a job to do and also shows who wasn't doing it. Zonal marking allows indecision as to who is supposed to be doing what. We need to practice more to remain tight. That said we didn't let in too many goals overall last season. We just need to make sure we are marking everyone.
