So, to keep this deep thinking going for a few more minutes, that fresh, tear causing onion, is it dead or alive?

The onion is already dead.
It was dead the minute its means of living and growing was aborted by the person who plucked it from the womb that is Mother Nature.

Nah... the onion lives, leave it in a dark place and it'll start sprouting. It could be put back into the earth and will re grow. That's the principle of the onion 'set'. Onion rings are dead though.

So it's both dead and alive. Nah... it's alive until butchered and cooked. The more interesting concept is where does the onion's desire/imperative to re grow and recreate come from? Onions obviously don't have a brain as such, but do they indeed have a soul?
