Obviously a fair amount of doom mongering going on of late so I just wanted to put a thread out there highlighting the positives that have come out from the Cologne Cup: -Bojan getting another 60 mins fitness under his belt - Odemwengie looking sharper plus the goal to his name - Bobby Moseley and Ollie Shenton getting some minutes for the local lads - Johnny Tex not looking as bad at centre half as he does at left back - our 2 new Dutch maestros showing some decent touches and hopefully a glimpse of some future quality to come - The fans look like they've had a great time despite the results - an increase in our global image
Feel free to add more. Just fed up of all the negative stuff with only a week to go before the new season. In Hughes we trust

I'm firmly in the friendlies mean fuck all camp but the one thing that concerns me a little bit is how completely lacklustre we've looked as an attacking force these past three games. We know we have a few issues at the back and we may have to live with them all season but I expected a bit more from us going forward but we've created about 3 chances in 270 minutes of football. Friendlies do mean fuck all but at the same time the pressure and shackles are off in these games and we've looked staid, unimaginative and lacking in guile and created virtually nothing.

One of the positives must be that despite them only being friendlies we can't be complacent and there's lots of work still to be done. I don't think we can be too negative about things as there only friendlies but there's some obvious actions that need to be taken.
If Ryans likely to be out for long periods we need a dominant CB in as three we have left aren't powerful enough.
A RW is vital and a good one too.
A DM wouldn't go amiss if we can stretch too one as our current crop are too slow (bar VG)
On a positive note great too see Bojan and Odam coming through unscathed and looking stronger. Some decent cameos from youngsters and some promise from Affelay.

The positive for me is the management should realise we still need at least 2/3 players in imo.

Yeah, I think he might complicate the who's going to be pissed off about not being in the match day squad discussions from last week even further. Surely he'll be in the managers thoughts for the bench?

Can't argue with that in the slightest, great post. I didn't watch the Wrexham match, but we did manage to create and score a bunch, so it IS there somewhere. This Cologne cup was always going to be funny with the matches being played back to back with two different teams, but ZERO shots on target with 39% possession is not the Hughes revolution we have come to know. My positives are Haugard looking sharp again with some great saves, Mosely and Choulay looking good and Diouf being totally committed to the team, ran his legs off. Oh and Charlie looks a bit fitter Maybe Ryan resting out is the hugest positive?

What I have learnt is that when you play in the premier league you pay massive wages to players who are nowhere near as talented as players playing on the continent and who earn far less.
Look at Porto, why do they have a far better squad than us but a far lower wage bill?

Proved by Kono, they don't all chase the buck.

Look at Porto, why do they have a far better squad than us but a far lower wage bill? Because they sign cheap players to replace big name stars that they sell for huge profits. They've done it for the last 10 season's or more... With respect, we've done the same this year with two players and everyone* is moaning their tits off about a lack of investment and no spine in the side Maybe we need a bit of education?

And they're not in the horrible entity that is the Premier League that mean big bags of averageness earn 30k a week as a minimum.
Football over here needs a massive overhaul. It won't happen.

Maybe they know how to do it properly, we sold our best players cheaply due to the clubs incompetence to tie them down with longer contracts.

You're right- there were some positives.I'm particularly impressed with Haugaard, but the fact you can only play one keeper and we're blessed with Jack Butland makes it difficult to get overly excited right now! That said, an injury to Butland and we're in safe hands with Given and Haugaard. For the potential starters- Bojan's hour was encouraging and Odemwingie looked lively in both matches (despite his failure to look along the defensive line...) I'm pleased Shenton, Moseley and Moha all played and none of them disgraced themselves, either. Hopefully we saved our attacking impetus for the real deal because we had none of it over the weekend.

Seems everyone else is ignoring this wum mate, he came out with the same bollocks about Singapore, needs a change of bait. As well as the above positives, one I haven't seen mentioned is Charlie Adam, looks a lot fitter and more motivated than he normally does at this stage of the season, I think Arnie and him will do well this season.
