I don't know if the plan is to play Ginkel and Ibrahim together in the Whelan and NZonzi positions behind Bojan when all three are up to speed but it could be a devastating combo! Ibrahim seems very versatile and Ginkel played much of his time at inter in defensive midfield - maybe those two could alternate in the defensive and more advanced midfield jobs during a match? Perhaps that is Hughes plan, with Ibrahim only moving to the left wing when Arnie is not fit? I like this. The 4231 has fit for awhile but with the players available it has seemed hard to get the right mix. If mvg and Ibrahim can fill those cdm roles we may be looking good. I look at a 4141 set up because of available players, and with Whelan and mvg both available would seem to work on occasion.

He would but I think in general it's looking far more likely that Ireland is the one susceptible to leaving. And if Afellay is going to be used through the middle it adds another question I have about the business we've done thus far. I find it all rather strange! Yeah if the intention is to use him in the middle, it certainly raises more questions than answers. Maybe Hughes is simply experimenting though. Possibly but the consensus seems to be that it worked and he did well there. And that it's where he's been playing for the past few years and done orate when fit. He doesn't seem to be the lightning fast winger we need at any rate!

If Bojan is fit, then Hughes is definitely going to start him and if he intends on playing Affelay in the middle, is he going to play the two side by side with MVG holding? He's certainly not going to have Affelay protecting the back four. I guess Affellay would be playing where Adam played, Bojan where N'Zonzi played and MVG doing the Whelan role. As I said, more questions than answers.

On paper that looks like a weak as piss midfield though and I mean that in the physical/tough in the tackle sense and has MVG got the discipline to sit there and protect like Whelan has? It'd scare the shit out of me.

On their day, going forwards and all on form, you're talking top champions league standard but when the chips are down and in you're in a battle on a cold winter's night, just how much actual spine is there? Tons of questions to be answered and even more so if Affelay is earmarked for a central role.

Obviously we'd all take Adam over Ireland but what about Sidwell over Ireland? I'd be looking to let one of them leave that's for sure.

We should try and keep them until / if better options mean that we have too many to register in our 25. MH task is to manage 25 players good enough to make the starting 11 If we secure a "last minute bargain" then someone could go out on loan or of course be sold

If one of these had to leave, i'd prefer it to be Ireland although i do think he's a very good footballer, technically he's one of our best i think but he just doesn't show it enough.

I'm not saying we should sell Ireland or Sidwell for the sake of it, obviously if/when we have someone to come in and replace them in the squad (we better sign another winger)

Don't think he moved wide at all today , showed some nice touches but looked a few weeks from match sharp to me

I'm of the view he played him there to get lots of the ball while he's settling in. Being perched out on the wing getting the occasional dodgy pass when you're not match fit is no fun at all and it would have been a waste of 60mins.
If he can cover for Bojan there in a few early games too everyone's a winner.

I think Hughes has deliberately signed players for the attacking areas who are flexible. That's why we shouldn't be bemused when we are targeting supposed left wingers when we 'need' a right winger. These players are too good to be square pegs in round holes, they are quality players who can play across the front.

Afellay throughout his career has played on the left, right and through the middle. Konoplianka is a left winger! That is his position, it's where he's made his name and it's where he plays. Yarmolenko is the same but regarding the right wing. And so is Shaqiri. Neither really play on the left and both prefer playing on the right. Shaqiri has played as a number 10 though.

He was quite positive in that he took players on,I reckon he could still do a job on the wing. Why else would we have signed him ?He's not going to take the place of Bojan when he's fit is he You never know.

If you would prefer Ireland then I would worry about you, that's all It depends what formation we're playing doesn't it? If we're playing 4-2-3-1, Adam doesn't really work that well in the hole, he's much more effective in a deeper position, that's why I think Hughes switched formation last season to a 4-1-4-1 because he realised that was the best formation to get the most out of Charlie. For someone to play in the hole, I think Ireland is most likely to be the better option.

If the choice was between Adam and Ireland then the answer is simple, Adam at home Ireland away......

Based on comments that have been made about this guy, I really can't wait to see him in action.
Have we captured ourselves another gem? Many seem to think so. I was almost salivating when I heard Graham Hunter speak about him.
