Hope they go down this year. The anticlimax of the first game at the Olympic stadium when it's against Fulham

I'm out in Malta on holiday and went along to the National Stadium last week to see their 2nd leg match against Birkirkara.
They were outplayed for large parts of the game and if Birkirkara had a bit more up front then they could have beaten WHU on aggregate. They were a small side and lacked the power against West Hams big defenders.
One thing I did notice was West Ham's attitude. They appeared to play as though they only had to turn up to win and were very niggly when things weren't going their way - Mark Noble should've been sent off well before Tomkins went. When they brought Maiga on it showed signs of desperation as afterwards a Hammers fan said we got rid of him once and then he came back - he wasn't confident for this season.

Being realistic though from looking at there team they did have a lot of first teamers missing. Noble was one of the few you could see starting

I don't think West Ham want to be in the Europa and they are treating these games as just pre-season friendlies. With the Olympic Stadium coming next year and a new manager they don't need the distraction of the Europa. They'll lose next week and go out to the relief of the hierarchy at the club.

Danny Collins' interview quotes in The Evening Standard in the big match build-up.
Enjoy.
“We have to be streetwise. James got sent off in Malta and Diafra Sakho the previous match. That can’t happen. We must be more professional.
“It’s enjoyable for me because you don’t see it week in and out on the Premier League. It’s a great eye-opener for the younger players. I had it a lot when I was growing up and it made me a stronger player.”

They'll do better if they're not in it anyway but it would be embarrassing to lose to that side with the money they've spent!

I see it differently European Football and moving to an Iconic new stadium would be great selling points to attract new players.Time and time again people rubbish the Europa but everyone at SCFC has ambitions to play in that competition and potential recruits want this too. History shows that Europa league does marginally affect league position but surely its a price worth paying. I too would love to see the demise of Wham and the Dildo boys but I can't see it happening anytime soon.

I watched a bit of the Southampton v Vitesse game on BT Sport last night.
I'm sure I heard the commentator say that if West Ham were to go all the way to the final it totalled 31 games for them including the earlier qualifying rounds.
Let's hope they stay in as long as possible... :-)

What is it with you lot? Thread after thread of negativity of other clubs transfers, managers, stadiums, supporters and general disparaging of anything that isn't you - I appreciate this is a Stoke board but come-on the ignorance and chip on shoulder etc........
You'd be surprised the level of respect Stoke have got these days and the good job Hughes has done - why can't anyone give credit to other clubs? Most Hammers see you as top 10 and maybe higher.
I was at the game last night along with 33000+ other Hammers - the 3rd sell out playing pre-qualifiers. Astra are a decent team - they done Lyon last season and anyone who was there would have seen us boss the game for 60 mins until Collins gave the ref the opportunity to give them a man advantage. Up until then they'd barely a kick and even with 10 men we had 60%+ possession with their keeper pulling off some good saves.
A 30yd worldy + an own goal gives them the advantage going into the return leg - and if we don't get through so be it. I can understand the fair-play ridicule but the inconsistency of refereeing decisions and scumbag diving, cheating and our naivety of what I've seen in three home and one away leg suggests we've a lot to learn about European competition even if you're the better team. I won't be happy if we go out after the return leg but it ain't the end of the world either and Bilic has used it as a decent competitive pre-season blooding a number of youngsters including a starting centre back last night Reece Oxford (16) who's a proper player. Actually I think we'll do-em - we'll see.
As for our much debated new Stadium - you're be pleased to know it earn't it's first bit of corn for the tax-payer last week. 51000 people turned out to watch people run fast and throw stuff despite UK athletics paying nothing for the stadium. Next up is the egg chasers paying back a bit more. You'll be interested to know that the real capacity of the stadium will remain at nearly 75000 after conversion, it's just that in football mode the number of bogs and catering facilities limits it to 54000 under FIFA guidelines and we'll be covering these seats with images of Brady's breasts.
Oh and by the way - you'll be shocked when you play us next - a different team, a different style altogether - and if we want to buy another striker because our perma crocked front-man Carroll and extremely talented but poorly used previously Enner Valencia (who scored a blinding header last night) leaves us needing to find someone new - don't worry about it - we can afford it!!
Rant over.....

Rant over..... For what it is worth I think you will go very well this season and I have said so already a number of times on here. I really like WHU as a football club, and it remains one of my favourite away days, whether it will post Olympic Park I am less sure but I have the memories. I am never sure quite what a 'proper football club' means but West Ham is exactly that. People make fun of the WHU won the World Cup thing but I'm not stupid enough to think if England ever won the World Cup again and Stoke had the captain and the hat trick scorer and the other scorer in the World Cup Final we would never bother to mention it ! And I should also add that I say that despite the fact that I have only ever been attacked 4 times at a football match down the years once against Birmingham City, once against Manchester City and TWICE against West Ham so you can see I am not a man to bear a grudge, quite the opposite in fact!

Gods, hopefully the 80's stuff is gone now. The tribal hardness is still there but sanitised stadiums have in the main put paid to the mob (ICF) mentality. And yes back in the day - we had a proper firm.
The only time anyone bangs on about the World Cup is one of sarcasm or irony - we know we've been average or shit for years!!
Chamberlain - I first started reading this board when DAVE was at his zenith - and it was properly funny, as it is with all forums when an ITK spiels their info (true or otherwise). IMO the lack of DAVE regularly posting is a big miss.
I joined to simply address some of the misnomers posted about West Ham and put a balanced view on stuff. I've also been to the Brit more times than some on here.

I think it's nerves, Hammered. I think we haven't quite assimilated the victory against Liverpool at the end of last season and people are worried that we won't do anywhere near as well a week tomorrow when they come back for their revenge. That and a very frustrating summer trying and so far failing to capture so-called "marquee signings." Oh yes, and jealousy that we're not in Europe ourselves.

iwebbyyy - I'm going to disagree with you here. The paranoia and overall negativity etc..for a club that's truly established in the PL after what is it, 9 seasons is frankly disproportionate to the success you've had. You know how the PL works - Top 4/6, bottom 3 and mid table cannon fodder.
Have a look on KUMB now - you won't find a thread about anyone else unless something exceptional is going down or affects us in a material way. As for the expectant at Salford UTD - well say no more.
Sfance - we've had enough "so called" marquee signings past and present. First off there is no such thing as a free transfer and until anybody coming in makes a fundamental difference to results or pleasing pattern of play - they're just a headline.
Your win against Liverpool last game should give confidence that Hughes has you sorted and no-one will want to visit the windiest, highest stadium in the PL and expect anything other than a tough match.
Boskamp - this thread isn't about signings and a view on the business of others. That wasn't my point. I just think you guys undervalue the Stoke brand and have no need to constantly find a reason for your place in the division

Hammered, for what's it's worth, I think you will finish above us. I don't know where abouts in West Ham you live, but I used to live in Ilford and I must confess I could never take/ got on with any Hammers fans especially. That said, out of all the London sides, I like West Ham the most. And in a strange roundabout way, you're not a too disimlar club from Stoke (albeit with a much bigger fan base)
I wish you the best for the season but this year, I'm not sure if you will need it.
