that was shocking by johnson, just let him walk past How many times have we heard that in the past, he is awful has been for years desperation signing from Hughes. It's also one of his first games in ages. He's bound to be rusty. Give him time. He'll be a great signing for us.

44 minutes of the game here if you want to put yourself through it again and the commentator sounds like he's underwater, which is fun.

Apart from the terrible defending and Irelands lack of qulity, this game just shows what happens when we play without pace in the team. This was as pedestrian as a Pulis 2012/13 team.

He'll be a great signing for us. A number of new players / some coming back from injury / little playing time- you can learn a lot from this kind of performance as tough as it is for the fans Yes a disappointing performance - we nearly got away with it. Instead of moaning at the likes of Johnson, we need to give our support to whoever plays. Bigger concern is will Shawcross be ready for 90 mins in our first league game? Tomorrows game should provide a few answers

Is Johnson ready for 90 minutes in our first league game?
And if the answer is no, he shouldn't start.

Been out all day. Brief summary of the game? 1.Defence looked shakey without Shawcross 2.Midfield looked slow without Arnie and Bojan 3.Front line looked lightweight without Diouf Only a friendly though and to be fair they were the home team and we didn't look bothered whether we won or not. No real insight just another run out

I thought I'd take a couple of hours before commenting on that "performance."
Plus points: Afellay looked good on the ball after he moved inside - a Bojan-lite. Tex is not as bad as we thought, but nowhere near good enough. Rip VG is good going forward, though not as assured in possession in defensive situations as SNZ. Wingy is getting his match fitness, sharpness and confidence back, and a goal will do him a world of good. Butland looked solid and could do nothing about the goals.
Negatives: Johnson bottled that tackle at the end and generally looked slow and unfit - nowhere hear ready to start next week. Muniesa had a right 'mare - let's hope he puts that behind him as we know he is quality. Erik also looked less than sharp - at least it's another game in his legs. Joselu looks tidy on the ball but not a real goal threat (albeit with poor service) - Modeste looked far better money spent. When we play with no pace out wide (what was Ireland doing out there?!?!?!?) we look very one dimensional and bereft of goals. Ireland - I need say no more.
Some perspective - that 11 will never play a league game together, but some played themselves out of contention for next Sunday with abject showings (even out wide, Ireland looked awfully disinterested). Let's hope tomorrow's team gives us a boost and shows way more attacking intent and defensive solidity.

My thoughts on what I just watched.
Butland made some good saves. Johnson isn't match sharp. Jonny Tex will never be a premier league centre back. Muniesa still looks a liability with balls played over the top/goes wandering/makes some great attacking moves Pieters still needs to work on his crossing Van Ginkel did well Sidwell looks like he needs a run of games but certainly an option in midfield Walters was solid, still best served playing out on the right Ireland needs to play behind the striker and behind the striker only Afellay was one of positives, able to impose himself on the game at times. Great dribbler and had a good range of passing Joselu...Still don't think we know how to play to his strengths, but he was quiet again Odemwingie still doesn't look fit but great to see him get the goal.
Overall as others have said, although we may have a better squad the first team feels weakened to watch

Is Johnson ready for 90 minutes in our first league game? And if the answer is no, he shouldn't start. His defending was piss poor when he was fit it would be utter madness to start him when he is not, poor signing smacks of desperation freebies and loan players are obviously not the answer, we should have kept Huth we look so weak at CB the thought of Wolly playing quite a few games is scary.

Not seen the game but it sounds like we're going down.
Unless we win the next friendly. Then we're definitely top 6.

There was a thread on here the other day saying we should all keep strong and united if we lose 5 games on the bounce. Looks like we need that advise after a narrow defeat in a pre-season friendly . Always struck me that sport in general is one of the few 'occupations' where the people who are watching ( because they are generally not talented enough to actually perform at the highest level) sit in judgement on those who ARE employed at the highest level. I wonder what the judgements would be all of us on here had their professional/job abilities judged by people who knew little about or had no ability to do any of those jobs. Would we all be happy to be told we are 'shite' or should be sacked or should think of packing in the job? When I was working, I didn't mind criticism/constructive suggestions about my standard of work BUT if the local butcher, ice cream salesman or garage mechanic did the same, not sure I would lend much, if any, credence to their comments. (Apologies to all butchers, ice cream salesmen and garage mechanics out there) (Suppose if you've paid to watch, you're entitled to judge?) I doubt there are many on here that haven't been playing and watching for as long as they could walk.

If you look at their home results last season as the commentator mentioned 9 goalless draws should tell you why we had trouble opening them up today.

Shawcross and Glen Johnson. Both should be starting vs Liverpool. Will they? Should they?
