I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up settling for Aaron Lennon in a couple of weeks time. Marquee signing? Yes/No? No, no and thrice no

A 'marquee signing' isn't as important as the right signing. Exactly this.

Marquee signings, the best teams have them. To be one of the best teams, we must have one.

Can't remember TP making a marquee signing. Crouch ? Palacios' shirt doubled as a marquee

I know this has been debated to death but i was just reading about Di Maria leaving the shit, and all of their past 'marquee signings' and how most of them didn't work out. And I was thinking, do we need such a thing, is the only way a Chairman can show his support for a club just splashing the cash? I know it's obvious but look at Bojan, the biggest bargain in football history. I think that players are going to be more interested in coming here based on league position, winning a cup etc. than if someone they've heard of signs. Or is it all down to wages? Yes. It would demonstrate clear inTENT. Sometimes I crack myself up!!

It's not important to the team but it is to us fans gives us something to look forward to and speculate about.

It's a team game and there is a danger of getting fixated on one player to the extent that he becomes "irreplaceable" in some minds. However good that player is he needs the other ten. A good blend of quality players is better in my opinion than a couple of star quality players and nine mediocre ones. Not fussed about a big name signing unless that paves the way for further quality signings. Absolutely correct. The only time ever IMO 1 player "made" a side was Maradona. Otherwise all the "greats" depended on their team mates. The importance of a marquee signing is it galvanizes the team, the club, and the supporters. And, in the case of the all time stand out signing of Stan, galvanized a whole city, in a way that probably could not happen in this age. I remember feeling when we signed Banks "well we'll be all right now". I remember when we signed Greenhoff being really excited that we now had someone who would make a difference. When Waddington then went and signed John Ritchie, I was ecstatic. Somehow the signing of Hudson wasn't as exciting; maybe I was getting blase after going to FA Cup semi-final and League Cup final and it just felt it was a natural progression of events. Nevertheless it would be brilliant if we could bring a top player to the club, but it doesn't in itself guarantee another 9th place, and I can live with it if we don't sign anyone, knowing that teamwork counts most.

Can someone please define what the fuck a "marquee" signing is first.
Then I might be able to answer the op's question.
Personally I think it's all a massive load of bollocks.

Apparently. Mark Hughes thinks it's important, he's in charge, he's responsible for the team's performance, it's his job on the line with such decisions. The discussions, opinions on here are just so much background vocal fluff - but interesting and amusing nevertheless

I'll take the injury bug leaving us the fuck alone over a so-called 'marquee' signing. If we can stay relatively healthy, having our guys back will make it seem as if we made a bunch of signings. I just can't handle another season of us looking like a triage unit.

When you compare some of our signings from the past to the last couple of years. All the new ones seem like marquee signings ! I am quite happy with what we have now. And don't think we need a big name for the sake of it.

Marquee signings, the best teams have them. To be one of the best teams, we must have one. To become of the best teams we need several but the first will break that ground for the following ones. It's essential that players of Champions League or just below quality start to see us as a viable option. Even if that's as a stepping stone to establish themselves in the Prem to get their dream move. If they're good enough, them moving on does not hurt us because we take a tidy profit to reinvest and a demonstrable example to prospective signings of how establishing themselves in this way can work to their advantage. We're a bit inexperienced at our players going on to taste the bigger stage but IMO its something we need to get used to and use positively to sell the club to these next level players. We've been too many years a football grave yard where nobody really covets our players and they seldom go on to better things. Legacy.

Put it this way have we signed a player that's better or on par with Nzonzi ? We aren't going to be in a position to answer that for a few months. Remember when we signed him, we hardly thought it was the transfer coup of the decade. He's gone forget him and move on. As I've said in another post use his transfer to Europa league champions and Champions League club to sell us to potential signings. Sign for us do well and you will be coveted by the elite clubs. Convince enough of them and you never know how close to joining that elite you may get. Signing players of that quality who've always dreamed of playing for Stoke and can't wait to sign up for the rest of their career only happens in supporters red and white striped fantasy's.
