Often wondered why a city like ours doesn't have an arena venue like Nottingham, Derby or Bolton instead of wasting money on the new civic quarter in hanley.
It would be great have a decent arena (5000 seats like Bolton/Derby) to watch some decent concerts or darts or boxing, etc.
The council really do sell the city poorly to the outside world.

This council can't even get their own monstrosity of a building built correctly, even with all the backhanders and dodgy envelopes of cash that building that soon to be demolished £60million eyesore entailed. Then there's the new Hanley bus station as well.
Would you really trust this inept and corrupt council of ours with such a project?

If you can find the local plan for Stoke they wanted to build a venue on the waste ground at the rear of the train station.
Next was a bridge across the A500 to the old spode site, which would be some independent shopping area.
Finally a bunch of new housing running from the police station, across Booth Street and London Road all the way to Corporation Street.
A spectacularly better way to spend £50m, although I am sure there are thousands of those.

The closest thing to an arena would have been The Lomax in Stoke

Demolish that Shit hole in Burslem and put it there. The shit hole arena lacks a bit of marketability

The closest thing to an arena would have been The Lomax in Stoke The Lomax didn't last long, it had some kind of sprung dancefloor or somesuch. Moby played, The Stereo MC's, The Plump DJ's... and then nowt. It wasn't quite big enough to offer much different to Victoria Hall, Theatre Royal or even Sugarmill. Shame, it was a smart venue. Flats now I think. An Arena. Put a {retractable} roof on the Brit, sell it to Orange {or whoever} and rebuild an all singing all dancing stadium complex on the former Shelton Bar site {or back on the Vic.} Easy.

Was thinking the exact same thing whilst watching the darts the other night. Derby have recently had a 5000 capacity arena built at a cost of 27 million, can't see anyone wanting to invest that sum into a project in S-O-T though unfortunately.

The Lomax was a brilliant venue. Should have been the Stoke version of the Manchester Apollo. God knows how they got Moby to play, he was massive at the time and it was right in the middle of a stadium tour.

I've asked the same question myself for years, the answer is we have an inept council with no vision or any idea on how to market the city and make it seem more appealing/attractive to the outside world. Think small and sell short.

On the flip side is there a need for an arena when we have The Regent that we can't fill? It would also probably kill of the Viccy Hall?
Both council subsidised?
There's your answer.
But on the double flip side, such a thing could be an excellent addition to Hanley where the old bus station and all that area is. Because that city central thing won't happen any time soon! It could then work inconjunction with the Viccy Hall with that hosting smaller events. Boom!

Cannot for the life of me understand how Mr Coates Mr Bamford and Mr Caudwell couldn't gift 5 to 10 million each and have a medium sized arena built in the city. As people have said, the old Vic or the old Hanley bus station - how good would that be ? It could be called summat like the bet365 Arena or the JCB Arena and naming rights could switch every 5 years - if anyone knows any of this trio.....put it to 'em !!!
