As I've got older I seem to prefer the less stronger beers - especially after a walk as they are a bit more refreshing - so, spring head brewery's 'outlawed', Evans Evans 'SPA', Harrington bitter 'Whim', Woods 'shropshire lad', intrepid brewery 'explorer', mobberley fine ales 'hedgehopper' etc etc So many beers so little time! BTW if you live near Madeley there's a mini beer festival on at the moment - started Thursday, finishes tomorrow if any beer is left - 12 beers, 4 ciders - pop in if you're passing - for details of the beers try the Madeley centre website, which is where it's being held & free entry! (that's Madeley near NUL, not the Shropshire variety!)

Had a tour around Leek this after, Peakstones' 'Cowboy' and 'Standing Stone' for less than two quid. Good. A mini micro craft cider thing going on too. Several cider third of a pint tasting platters. The names of which I'll probably never come across again. So I've decided not to retain them in me head. I liked the strongest one. Sunday afternoon boozing is for kings

Marston's have cottoned on to the craft beer thing. Letting their landlords name an ale. Almost like it's bespoke. 3.8% nameable eyewash. Light for summer, Dark for winter. Damn their hides. Can see some Marstons 'Shawcross' up the Brit next term. Nice drink all the same.

It's something to do with making steak pies made with porter ....a bit like modern day steak and ale pies ....it was common practice to put oysters in the pies with the beef and porter....a poor mans pie in those days .

Up here in Chester I'm putting a word in for our local brews
Spitting Feathers Big Hand Weetwoods
all produce quality ale. None of them blight the TV with lame adverts aimed at "being one of the lads" - Lets hope this trend continues...

Marston's strong pale ale is another nice drink but you don't need many of those

Thwaites 'Lancaster Bomber' is quality too. I think Marston's have just bought out Thwaites, but intend to keep the Thwaites brand for now.

Sarah Hughes.. nice, a rare treat but sometimes found in the Black Lion Consall. Had a pint of it last week in the 'Mucky Duck' in Leek. {I think.} Agree with the Lymestone Brewery too, good gear, but only had it at the Gladstone Pottery do's. Not seen it on general sale around here. They run a pub in Newcastle, the Lymestone Vaults next to Chatwins and you can get the bottled stuff either directly from them or from Brown and Greens at Trentham www.lymestonebrewery.co.uk/Another good brewery is Peakstones Rock, up in the Moorlands. They name a few after the Alton Towers rides. www.peakstonesrock.co.uk/If you fancy a tip north then I recommend Dunham Massey brewery in Bowdon. www.dunhammasseybrewing.co.uk/Did a "tour" of the Lymestone brewery in Stone, Brad knows a thing or two about brewing some very nice drinks on offer and some home made lobby Also went to Nantwich food festival on Saturday and they had a stall in the Church along with another brewery from North Wales again some nice tasters on offer

It's really good. They do pretty much all of their range, alongside some imports and ciders/perry's etc. Nice and cosy with a decent crowd.

Malt n Hops on King Street Fenton well worth a visit, he has three or four guest beers on which change on a regular basis. My favourites include Blue Monkey and Hook Norton. Good atmosphere on match days too.

Alcohol is an extremely interesting landscape at the moment. I've just encountered Guinness Nuts and Hobgoblin Spit Roast Crisps.
