Ive come to this conclusion based on what is happening the last couple of weeks. Now he is never going to come out in public and say this because he will be ridiculed by the Press and fans alike. But talk of offering Shaqiri to sign and leaving for a Champs League team after 12 months. Im convinced that in private he is telling his management team and potential signings that we are aiming for a top 4 Champions League spot next season. I love the guys ambition, he is clearly not happy with mid-table security and wants to go down in history playing and managing at the highest level (hopefully with us). The only way Hughes is getting top 4 is if he gets a new job. Another top 10 finish, positive goal difference, decent football and a cup run would do nicely. Our best change of European football is to win or be runners up in a cup.

No way does Hughes believe that we can be a top four team next year.

Pretty sure you have to win the FA cup now to get into Europe. Correct. Incorrect. Winning either of the domestic cup competitions would secure European football. A 6th placed finish would almost guarantee it and subject to who the cup winners are, so would 7th.

My answer was to the question that you could get a European place by being a runner up in a cup competition, and you can't.

Eighth place and a good cup run is a very achievable target for next season. Sixth place is a stretch goal we should be aiming for - based a last year's points that would be 8 more points (i.e. not losing at home to teams well below us in the league). IMO fourth is very unlikely (16 more points), without strengthening the squad (especially the right side) and retaining N'zonzi.

If the winners have already qualified for Europe, then the European spot goes to the next highest league position.

A league position which led to a Europa Cup place would be nice, but I'd rather reach a domestic cup final next season.

Ive come to this conclusion based on what is happening the last couple of weeks. Now he is never going to come out in public and say this because he will be ridiculed by the Press and fans alike. What has happened in the last couple of weeks is absolutely nothing, other than lots of paper talk and speculation. That said, I would hope that Hughes, along with every other manager, starts each season with aspirations of a top 4 finish. Whether that is realistically achievable, as long as the 6 money bags teams continually spend and spend, is another story. I just think it's time for a real salary cap, with a finite maximum definite spend and not one based on income. Couple this with a maximum transfer spend and only then will we get a competitive league with realistic chances of top 4 finishes for anyone other than the "rich" clubs, Man U, Man C, Arse, Spurs, Liverpool and Chelski. Otherwise it just isn't going to happen.

Finishing 6th. would be a hugh leap for us,but top 4 would be a leap too far, anyway the powers that be, would not let it happen.

Like the optimism matt but we're not at the stage of chucking 30 million at a full back like the shit have done or chucking 70 million at a player like Man City are doing with Pogba Chelsea always throw around silly money Then you've got the runts at Arsenal. Theres you're top 4 next season without kicking a ball...lets face it. When we're at the 30 - 40 million pound player bid stage, then perhaps...... It will never happen though. Bitch heh.......dunna werrit tho fella we can just get on it in cocos one afternoon and take the piss out of whoever we're playing !!!! Let me know when you're up for a scoop - ( not against the bin dipping victims though, Im on me hollybobs)

I just don't get how we go from interest in the likes of Knoplyanka and Shaqiri to Junior fucking Hoilett? It doesn't seem sane thinking to me, surely there's a bit of middle ground? Who the fucking fuck has mentioned Junior fucking Toilet? Where has this been mentioned and what the fucking fuck is going fucking on? H I read it on something called Twitter. I don't know if you've seen it, it like a million Hackett's sharing solid gold information. Brilliant it is.

Top 4...No. Top 6..Maybe.. Higher than last season yup....We can. Look at who we were behind.. Can we catch:- Chelsea....Nope... Man City...Nope.. Arse...Nope.. Scum...Nope.. Spurs...Maybe...After all we did the double over them. Liverpool...Maybe...6-1 was incredible, but I doubt we'd have done that earlier in the season. Saints...yes we can.. Swansea...Yes we can... And can we hold off the likes of Everton, West Ham, Newcastle...Yup.... So Top 6 Maybe achievable 7 or 8 certainly achievable.

It's a natural progression slow but sure, Blackburn were a similar club and a rich passionate man came along and they won the League. I'm not for one second saying we will we the League but we can challenge cant we ? Otherwise lets not play the games we should just draw straws and save a shit load of money and bother. Our club are ambitious that includes the management team and Board why cant supporters dream and hope without being called stupid there is nothing wrong with wishing for better things surely. Chelsea, United, arsenal, citeh will be challenging, we will not. I love a dream and yes Blackburn won it but it was a different time when they won it not many billionaires knocking around then, in fact weren't Blackburn the richest club in England at the time?

Because we're not playing FIFA Career Mode at the moment very smooth... Seriously though. Realistically, the limit is 7th place maximum. Then of course we've got the FA Cup and League Cup. Which we now have to win. They are our best chances. It would take some mega investment, the likes of which we simply cannot be doing yet. It won't be happening anytime soon, and it would be a total freak if it ever did.
