Growing up I had the feeling the best was yet to come for England. That success would arrive and we had to be patient. However, from the moment Waddle's penalty flew over the bar any optimism drained way. Our chance had gone.
For my generation (I'm 46) 90 was our 66.

Just being pedantic joe
Was it West Germany or was it the first WC since unification and they played as just Germany?

Wall came down in 89 but unification took place in 91 (I think)

The thing is we sugar coat it. We remember these moments and get misty eyed BUT really, deep down inside, in the bottom of our hearts, we knew we weren't going to get through.

We should have won that World Cup in 1990 we were the best team, just like Euro 96 we should have won that too.

We should have won that World Cup in 1990 we were the best team, just like Euro 96 we should have won that too. I disagree. Germany and Italy were by far the best two sides in 1990. In 1996 we were much closer but we had five games at home and only won two of them. Not enough to lay claim to a trophy.

I was on a RN patrol ship around the Falklands when this game was played. BBC World Service was very sporadic so it was broadcast via Falkland Islands Broadcasting Service ( known affectionately by the British Military as FIBS). The commentary was from BBC but the punditry after the game was local. Remember them talking about the, possibility of a Falklands team competing in the next World Cup. Bless those Bennies.
