These individual player transfer threads are almost embarrassing. Xherdan will not sign and has absolutely no intention in doing so (see Kono thread for the same outcome). If an offer is made and accepted, we need to give the player a deadline for their signature. Otherwise we end up looking silly. My Dad always used to say 'don't let the tail wag the dog '. SCFC are bigger than any player and I'm confident that we'll add real quality. There's a bit of a pattern happening here folks...signings that are in the press (and on here) are not happening. Those that are under the radar, are. This quite clearly shows that all the 'in the know' ramblings on here are complete bollocks, as is all the Twitter shite. I'll take a wild guess and say that our next signing will not have 240 odd pages of speculation before a deal is agreed by all parties.

That's my thought too kono and shaqiri stories do make my heart beat faster tho so, at least it wasn't such a boring footy break this time around. it could be seen as laughable that Stoke were in for these kind of players but the fact that we did has just hilighted Stoke City around the globe as a team on the up......very clever

So how long do you suggest. 48 hours. oh wait the 3rd party dealing, which we weren't able to do, only expired on 1st and he surely had his head turned by Athletico in the morning, and Sevilla on the same day no doubt threw the cash to the player not 3rd party. Mmm.
I'm sure the team who've worked hard trying to make it happen are just as disappointed it's not happened.

These players have a lot of options. If one drops out they don't really care and there is no message to be sent to players or agents. They tell you what they want and you either agree or not. If we set deadlines we'd be onto plan Z before you could build a new corner.

That's the point though. It's happened in less than 2 days since he has been free from the 3rd party influence and claims. We always had to wait until that point. Others were trying to do the deal with the 3rd party getting their slice.

For the first time under hughes we are struggling to attract our number one targets, reason being that we are after that next level player such as Kono, Shaqiri but we are just not in that pond of players yet, more the moses and Lennon bracket really which would for me improve us but we are not a Spurs/Lpool yet and for me far from it. We did get that little gem Bojan which was incredible and I think we should go to Barca and try and get a fringe player from there, Roberto maybe but I think that one is a pipe dream.
I trust Hughes 100% and there is almost two months to get some decent quality to add to what we have and replace outgoing players so not panicking just yet.

Wake up The wage budget is being reduced and the first team from last year, who finished 9th , wont get us relegated.so the focus is on the under 21s. To feed the first team in the next season or so I wouldnt be surprised if joselu is it. We can take an emergency goal keeper. Then it just maybe a replacement if Nzonzi does leave.we know we need better on the right.i cant see it. The wing players diouf arnie walters odemwingie and moha after christmas.

I beg to differ we have always struggled and will continue to do so, plain and simple we only get players that nobody really wants or cares about. The clubs and its decision makers are totally to blame and why oh why they keep piping that we're ready to spend big on the likes of Kono etc beggars belief, it won't happen.

I'll keep dreaming thanks. I think Hughes can atract a star player, and the bigger the player the more protracted the signing, with more losing than winning. I'm in for the long haul. Middlesborough got Juninho and Ravanelli all those years ago. I bet they were told to move on too.

Lets face it YES there is bigger names than the like of stoke city as a football club around the world but what we keep achieving year upon year is getting us recognised all around the world and with top half finish's back to back now people will take notice. After all you could look at it this way we have signed 2 players that have played for the best teams in the world, Bojan & Joselu... Why On Earth would they wanna come play for stoke..?? To them its a job yes but also its nice to be wanted and first team football. What It comes down to is this i think personally - Am i Happy At The Club & Position I Am in (Wages Etc)
- Would I Like A Better Challenge & 1st Team Footy
- Family Life At Present & If I Move
If You Can Question Any Of Them @ The Club They Are Currently At Then Why Not Come To A Team Like STOKE CITY.. Afterall We Have The Best Fans In The World... =)

We had the same cynicism and negativity as the original post when Bojan was deciding his future this time last year. If we had put in a short deadline then, as many on here were suggesting, he'd probably have gone elsewhere.
Cilla is right - and we will probably find this sort of frustration to our deals until we can either offer Europe or a track record of success which is better than what we currently have.
We are already used to seeing our teams fighting above their weight - if we wish to improve our position from top half towards top 6 then we need better players.
There are three ways we can try to get the better players we need and only two of them are valid options:
1. get them young and improve them (signs that recruitment team and the academy staff are trying to do that) but it will inevitably take time.
2. Offer silly money beyond our means. We are not going to do that - we'll push the envelope but not so much that we'll put our future at risk.
3. Offer the best deal we can afford, to players who may or may not take those deals, depending upon whether they or their agents buy into what Mark Hughes and the club are trying to do. This will end in disappointment sometimes (probably most times) but the odd gems that we do succeed with, should help push us on to the next level.
The original poster is really suggesting that we should give up on option 3. Some posters are even suggesting we should try option 2. I really couldn't disagree with either point of view more than I do!

There doesn't seem to be an obvious coherent one in place.

The opening post is absolutely correct. Faff around it all you like but if the money is there and we want the player but they have loftier ambitions then move on smartish. We can build our success on players on their way up and those who have the vision to see a good opportunity when it is placed before them.

There doesn't seem to be an obvious coherent one in place. To some extent we don't need much of a plan B, Sheikh. When it comes to the top targets each season, Hughes will have an idea of the calibre of player he wants and he'll try to tempt players of around that calibre. We'll, hopefully, strike lucky with one or two each season. Concurrently with that we are also targeting more attainable players such as Joselu who may, or may not become top players in time. We'll also be alive to loans such as Moses last season - and the ones we are discussing as part of the Bego deal with Chelsea. It all looks a bit messy to the outsider - but 54 points and consecutive top half finishes suggest it is working so far.

We have taken monumental steps in our recent history and we have several more to make yet.
We have a World Class ex-footballer as our manager, World Class training complex and youth set-up, World Class bank accounts funding our adventures and, right now in this moment, a World Class 'taste' in footballers.
We will face rejection. We will face disappointment.
Don't give up just yet though - we are just getting started. A domino effect is most certainly scheduled to happen and I feel we're going to be in for one hell of a ride just yet. We need that little bit of 'luck' to send us on our way.

In all of this ambitious work being done by the club in trying to sign players "at the next level" - (It's great that we are doing this), it is also very important to keep our current players happy and wanting to stay here.
I believe that we have had a happy dressing room under Hughes and it needs to stay that way.
New players need to be able to fit in with the club ethos, even if they are "superstars"
Joselu a bit of an unknown but hopefully an excellent signing ,not sure he would have been coming to Stoke 3 or 4 years ago?
It's disappointing that the likes of Bego and N'Zonzi are looking to move away, but I would be very concerned if Ryan was unsettled.

Personally I can't see much wrong with the strategy that the club is using. I'm sure the negotiating team realise how difficult it will be to attract players of the calibre of Kono and Shaq and that's why they have begun making approaches for these players early on. If there is no success then that leaves plenty of time in the transfer window to open discussions with some of those players with a little less stardust. The time for panicking is a long way off, yet.
