A few years ago, I made an attempt to develop a yardstick to quantify how good a season had been. Obviously some criteria need to be adjusted, but here is what it broadly looked like.
I thought I'd take a stab at trying to define what would make this coming season "Great", "Very Good, or just plain Good.
Please add your thoughts and any additional measures we might want to consider.
Here is my attempt:
___MEASURE______GREAT____VERY GOOD____GOOD League Position:…...Top 7……………Top 10……………..13 ………....….Points:… 55……………....51…………...……..48 ....Goals Scored:…….55………....……50……………….....46 .Goal Difference:…….+5……....……….0…………………...-4 Finish Above 1:……Any Big 6……...Everton…….....……Newcastle Finish Above 2:……Everton……….Southampton……….Swansea .Against Top 6:…….12 Pts…………..9 Pts……………...…6Pts ………...Cups:…Any Semi-Final…..Any QF……Reach last 16 twice ………..Other:.. Break T/Fer Record…Have a current England International….Have 2 Top 15 country internationals
I'd add single event mandatory "Excellently Great Season" = Win Any of League, League or FA Cups, Euro Competition. And, single event mandatory "Extremely Terrible Season" = Relegation or Bankruptcy.
My initial hypotheses was that 6 out of 9 must be achieved to warrant awarding great, very good or good status. So if we scored 60 goals, with a goal difference of +17, ended above Everton & Southampton, reached the fa cup QF and Shawx played for England, but we avoided relegation on goal average, we would have met 6 of the criteria. However, I would not call that a "Very Good" Season. Clearly each criteria needs to be weighted.
I propose the following weighting: League Position - 6 pts Cups - 3 pts Points - 2 pts GS - 2 pts GD - 2 pts Pts against top 6 - 2 pts All other criteria - 1 pt
Finally if "Great Season" level achieved multiply points by 5, if "Very Good Season" level achieved multiply points by 3 and if "Good Season" level achieved multiply by 1. Then you have a score out of 100. As an initial guess, 70% = "Great Season", 50% = "Very Good Season", 30% = " Good Season".
Any ideas or suggestions to improve on this methodology or the levels of achievement?

Seriously though good work although I would add stuffing a top six team or doing the double over them to that list

An excellent season would be top 8 as that would be progress on these past 2 years and a cup final! A great season would be 9th again whilst beating some records e.g. points goals etc and at least a semi final. A good season would be top 10 for a 3rd year in a row. An OK season would be 10th-12th. Anything below 12th would be a bad season.

I'm not hung up on a cup run or something like that since this doesn't really mean anything in the long term. It's nice and if we got far I'd want us to continue, but it doesn't mean you've necessarily moved forward overall. For me, the league is the ultimate measure of a teams progress. I want some solid growth there. It's from a consistent league position that you can strengthen elsewhere. Consolidating top half finishes for 3 seasons would be excellent. Onwards and upwards.

Fookin technical lot you all are. I just watch the football and make my mind up whether it was a good season or not. Never even thought of introducing criterion, stats, pies or anything else. I'm obviously a simpleton.

Winning at any 1 of Emirates, Old Trafford, Anfield or Stamford Bridge. Doing a few doubles, esp the 3 promoted teams, plus baggies, villa, everton. Having a decent cup run, at least 1 semi, a final would be awesome, a trophy would be unbelievable. Not picking up injuries to the likes of Odemwingie, Bojan, Shawcross... Abby Clancy getting her knockers out if Crouchy scores a hat trick.

Bojan playing every game Winning the FA Cup, beating the Vale, Cardiff, The Shit and The Arse along the way Not losing at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge in the league Not getting rectally buggered by injuries Unbeaten at home, at least equalling points and GD Going the whole season without a red card, ending midtable for yellows Getting Ramsay sent off against us at the Emirates

I'd give up about 5-7 points if it meant winning at Arsenal.

Top 10 finish, a cup run (semis at least), some majestic Bojan moments, beating at least 3 of the top 6 at home and 2 of them away (including the Arse!), one or two real thumping performances at home (you know, 5-0 or 6-0 to us), at least one of MBD and Joselu getting 15-20 goals.

Scoring from a corner. Oh how times have changed! Seriously though, I'd like to see us making less silly mistakes and have a stable back 4, but hopefully injuries will be kind to us this time. Obviously to see more goals. And to beat Arsenal on their own turf. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using proboards

Same as this season but with Bojan starting 38 league games and fewer goals conceded = consolidation as a top 10 team.

1) Stay in the premier league 2) advance one place to eigth 3) A cup run (does not matter which) 4) Continue to entertain and be 'easy on the eye' (enhance our reputation) 5) Fill in a corner to advance the stadium and at least make it look complete
makes me very happy
