...after all the in fighting on the Oatcake, let have something we can unite behind (perhaps with the exception of SyndeyPotter ).... Well, they're here. Getting ready for the first Test: Wed 8 – Sun 12 July 1st Test Match Cardiff Thu 16 – Mon 20 July 2nd Test Match Lord’s Wed 29 July – Sun 2 Aug 3rd Test Match Edgbaston Thu 6 – Mon 10 Aug 4th Test Match Trent Bridge Thu 20 – Mon 24 Aug 5th Test Match Oval At least we'll be playing Dads Army. The Pre-Ashes squad strangely doesn't include Rashid, but does include Derbyshire seamer Mark Footitt. Also it really doesn't include any alternatives to the troublesome 3 and 4 slots too: Alastair Cook (Essex); Moeen Ali (Worcestershire); James Anderson (Lancashire); Gary Ballance (Yorkshire); Ian Bell (Warwickshire); Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire); Jos Buttler (Lancashire); Steven Finn (Middlesex); Mark Footitt (Derbyshire); Adam Lyth (Yorkshire); Liam Plunkett (Yorkshire); Joe Root (Yorkshire); Ben Stokes (Durham); Mark Wood (Durham). www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/33181437Will we continue with the aggressive cricket we've now taken to in the ODIs? Somehow I'm struggling to see Cooky really going for it - just not his style. Given all the new found confidence of the last few days, I would really hope we can build on it - but I sadly think the Aussies will be too strong (especially given their showing in the West Indies).

I see the gallant Baggy Greens are ensconced in Watford dutifully honing their English environment style batting and bowling skills. At first sight it would seem that they will need to be on their toes in order to combat this new energy, not to mention confidence, that the current crop of English players seems to have found….. and who can blame them after a thrilling series against our friends from across the Tasman. I also note that Mr Swann has thrust himself into the discussion by attacking the world’s new number 1 batsman. I remember the same person having a go at Smith a couple of years ago claiming that he wouldn’t make the first Ashes Test in Brisbane. You would have thought that he might have kept his opinions to himself this time around – after all since his last utterances concerning Smith he has built a Test average of 102. Not bad for a fella with faulty technique. It would seem that whist we had McGrath and Warne calling the odds in the past you seem to have found a brand new Oracle. I suppose we will all find out the truth by the end of this series. On the subject of faulty technique, or should that be suspect attitude, Davey Warner has said that he will tone down the on field chatter this year. I’m not so sure that’s a good thing for Australia’s chances or not. He’s always been a forthright chappie and seems to bat well if he’s involved in banter. He’s run into a bit of a stutter during the Windies trip and I’m hoping he can regain his edge before 8th July. We seem to have an overabundance of talent in the quicks department this year. In fact almost a full battery ready and willing to put England to the test – that is if they can keep their bodies together for a couple of months this time around.
So, there you go Bish, a brand new, unopened series to go and it feels like Christmas has come early this year. But there again, it always feels like Christmas during an Ashes series no matter who wins. (just so long as we bring back the urn) Wouldn’t you think that with all the technology available that the urn could be safely transported to Australia with the wining team.
I did say in an earlier thread that there are a number of journos who had said that this series is a sure fire certainty for the Baggy Greens. However, that was before the recent Kiwi series and before the English appointed Baylis as the coach. I think the odds have changed in the past two weeks or so, and the series will be closer than previously thought possible. Lets face it, England should do well, after all it is their home turf with everything that goes with that.
As for me, I’m hoping for a closely fought series with an Australian whitewash being the result at the end. What I’m also hoping for is that Mr Swann has his opinion firmly pushed back down his throat and for Root and Warner to become best mates – Mmmm, maybe that’s pushing it a bit far.

Can't help thinking we'd be in a better position if we'd had better selections in the recent series in the Windies - which we all felt was bizarre. Specifically Rashid should have had a few tests under his belt now and the likes of Wood and Lythe would have had more time in the middle.
I have a feeling that the eleven we play at the Oval will be the side we should have started with at Cardiff. How the series pans out between those tests will depend on how quick we make changes.

Don't think there's a great deal between the two sides in terms of batting. However the Aussies have a far superior bowling attack. Given England have the home advantage that will hopefully even it out a bit. If I was a betting man my money would be going on the Aussies.

We could struggle unless Ali can produce the form he showed v India last season,it is vital we have a spinner who can hold up one end whilst not giving too many runs away, so we can rotate out fast bowlers.

They can give it out but not take it eh Bish? For what it's worth I'd pick Rashid, the Aussies didn't handle Bishoo very well recently and I still think he could have the X Factor. He will go for runs but as long as he's managed and taken out of the firing line he'll come coming back strong he's got a very good temperament. But it will be Moeen back in and I'm nervous about how little he's bowled in the long format when he was dropped from the one dayers specifically to get overs in in readiness for the Ashes. Wood has nailed the 3rd seamer spot and Stokes' bowling will be a real key to the contest, he's a wicket tacker but if he doesn't bowl with discipline he'll go all over the park and won't be able to hold an end up. I'm being optimistic and going for a 2-2 draw..........

I would pick Rashid as well , he certainly turns it enough to cause problems , I can see him picking up a few wickets if he plays , but as you say I think they will go with Moeen at least initially .....Wood has been a little bit of a breath of fresh air in the attack , I hope he carries on bowling the same, he's got enough there to worry the best of batsmen .

The pub option is always good but if not plenty of streams around or if you know anyone with Sky they can give you their Sky anytime login to watch.

Dear me, Dad's Army eh! Favourites to take the series maybe, but still a hill or two to climb before they step aboard the Qantas jet back to Sydney. Hopefully there's plenty of life left in the old codgers yet to take on the spritely, confident, English. Somehow I think the new name will spur them on a tad - that's possibly the first tactical error, or is it the second following Swann's outburst.
