So in a city which already has one of the unhealthiest high streets in the UK and the health problems to go with it, and which has a dire proportion of low-skilled entry level jobs, here's the super intelligent campaigning Sentinel celebrating more low quality chain store food outlets and the jobs to go with them... www.stokesentinel.co.uk/16-sites-rejected/story-26614004-detail/story.html

These are private companies willing to invest in bringing business, jobs and redevelopment to wasteland to the gateway/edge of the city centre.

Looking at the list of venues they turned down, it's pretty evident that these old Victorian terraces in the centre aren't fit for purpose. They're empty because no one ones to set up business there. If I were in charge of regenerating Hanley, I'd keep old buildings like this... ...and bulldoze shit like this...

OK, it's not like having Microsoft relocating here, but it's a lot better than what's there at the moment. I'd rather work in Nandos than in a kebab shop. I fail to the problem here.

Healthy is not in the vocabulary of our beloved Council. How about this then... Imagine my surprise when I take the Kids to SOT Council run Dimensions Leisure Centre and Gym during Half Term. I walk in the main entrance and am faced with an eating area full of young Chav Mums and Dads drinking pitchers of Lager. Fucking unbelievable decision. These are the people in charge of our City.

Those type of Restaurants are the kind that people will eat in once, twice a month? in terms of what type of food they knock out, it's no different than what Frankie and Bennies are capable of serving up. What's the so-called 'healthy' alternative???
Let's not start blaming outlets like this for obesity. People need to take responsibility for themselves. "I'm fat because of Nando's" ??? Eh?

Hopefully these redevelopments will encourage more shops to open in Hanley.
If we can get stores like Zara, H&M, FCUK, Apple Store and Build A Bear workshop then it'll encourage people from Staffs and South Cheshire to choose Hanley over city centres like Derby.

Anything that brings in jobs and opportunity to this city is bloody brilliant.
Person A has no drive and wants a minimum wage waitress job - excellent there are some new ones on the way.
Person B has lots of drive and starts work as a waitress, moves into the kitchen, gains a team leader role, promoted to management, moves into corporate hospitality and ends up with a + 50k job.
There is no such thing as a bad job.

As for more 'high-end' jobs, Staffs Uni are closing their Stafford campus next year and bringing its 3000 students to Stoke.
Stafford has a lot of businesses that recruit through the uni, so they might relocate to Stoke too.

I'm not sure what stance you're attempting to take ....that of the Liberal Pissflapper or the 'committed socialist' or this years ' Green Party ' voter ...? On the hand you point out that the city has a higher than average low skilled entry level jobs , but then go on to attack the local paper for advertising job opportunities. By the way ... Why do you feel it necessary to call the paper " super intelligent " . I would have thought you would have been more accommodating and appreciatative of their efforts , regardless of your chosen polilitical hat of the day . Such outlets have existed in most major towns for the last 20 years and provided much needed employment for the unskilled . They may not be ideal , but it certainly better than nothing surely .... Sometimes one has to accept your lot in life and make the most of it . Stoke on Trent has been doing this for the last 80 years . Little has changed .

It took me roughly 16 years to work out what was wrong with Stoke on Trent . I left at 16 but came back . I left again in my twenties and the clock stood still. It has never restarted . The ruling council and its leader is only as good as the people it represents . Carps .....it's never gonna get better son sadly. I am sad to say. Mumf

I don't blame you in the slightest and I wish you all the very best . Leaving the city was a terrible wrench , and one that took 15 years to come to terms with, but was the best decision of my life for many reasons. I don't wish to be disparaging to you lads who still live there , but there is better and I took a massive risk . I was lucky . I miss the place every day , but then common sense takes over . Good luck mate ...but do keep in touch .

It's a double edged sword. Clearly the new jobs are very welcome but I agree that these new F&B outlets are basically giving the people of Stoke on Trent more of the same based on what cursory demographic studies say will most likely support.
The Sentinel should be campaigning for healthier and smarter options across a raft of issues, but they don't, compared to the rest of the UK they are part of the a dumbed down approach when it comes to many things.
Maybe there is room in the market for a more thoughtful and forward looking publication in the North Staffordshire area?
