All a bit sudden this. He was a brave man who confronted his personal demons n a very public way, I really hope his death was not due to a relapse although it seems likely. Bright guy, will be sadly missed.

RIP Charles, another one gone too early.
I bumped into him, dougy Alexander and the (now ex)Liberal MP for Inverness area when walking out of Inverness train station last year, he seemed a likeable man who had a good chat with my eldest lad (who is very into politics, liberalism and being in europe etc.) when my lad approached him to ask him a question

Always came across as a genial fellow - even when debating political points with opponents. RIP.

One of my favourite Charles Kennedy jokes is, [and remember the context of the 1962 Cuban missile crisis brought the world to the brink of extinction], "What would have happened if President Khruschev had been assassinated instead of President Kennedy?.......Aristotle Onassis wouldn't have married Mrs Khruschev!

One of the good guys.
Rarely agreed with him but you knew he believed in what he was saying - and his beliefs were genuinely for the best for all.
RIP and thoughts are with his family.

I've just been watching the local ITV news programme we have up here in the Highlands. There was a quarter of an hour of gushing praise from senior politicians of all parties , local Highland councillors and his former constituents. He was apparently a very friendly , genial and affable man whose life was blighted by alcoholism. However, I've sometimes wondered what he has ever done that benefited his constituents and those of us who live in the Highlands of Scotland. It seems to me that he was a self promoting egotist whose political and personal life were dedicated to improving his image and financial position. With regard to his alcoholism it must have been very difficult for his wife , family , party colleagues and constituents to deal with someone so unreliable.

I heard the news of his death, and was genuinely shocked and saddened. He always seemed a decent guy, irrespective of party politics.

Is it being the only leader of a major party that has been proven cortect by history on the biggest single issue of our generation (the Iraq War)? Listen back to his speeches - everything he doubted about the war was correct. The fact he came with a good sense of humour and decent public image doesn't change the fact that he had more principles than the rest of the Commons lot put together.

Listen back to his speeches - everything he doubted about the war was correct. He became the leader of the most inept and inert party in British politics . As regards to the war ....a matter of opinion I'm afraid . If We hadn't intervened then Sadam would have threatened the whole of the major Middle eastern oilfields and cost of a barrel of oil would have trebled crippling economies across the globe . You can argue the toss as to the info provided beforehand , but that is not important in the grand scheme of things . Yes Oil rules ....and Sadam has to die . Good riddance to bad shit and all that . He killed 300,000 of his own people along with many opposition party officials and even members of his own family , so if you , or Charles Kennedy want to take the route of righteousness , then don't expect me to hitch a ride . There was nothing he said about the War that would have influenced the Americans ....and rightly so . Since the war , oil prices have become a lot more stable and Iraq has gone back to killing one another . Some things never change do they ? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work that one out ? As for his sense of humour , yes Pleasant and decent man . He was a good public speaker too.

Quite shocked to hear this news. Kennedy only being 55. Spoke out against the Iraq bombing and its long term consequences (ISIS being the main one)
RIP
