it really is well worth a watch.thought shearer's analysis was limited as ever but all other contributions were very insightful. I knew the great man could dribble and cross but I never realised how bloody quick he was over short distances!

I knew the great man could dribble and cross but I never realised how bloody quick he was over short distances! I watched him when he returned to Stoke in his late 40s and I couldn't believe how fast he was over the first few yards. As it happened, he was the same age as my dad (to within about a year). The odd thing was that, facially, he looked older than my dad but when he beat his fullback (as he usually did) he moved like someone 15 years younger. In his last years before retirement he didn't have the stamina to play 90 minutes very often but, luckily, subs had arrived in football and we used to get a 45 minute master class from him most weeks.

My abiding memory of Stan was during the 62/63 promotion season, we played Chelsea one of our rivals for promotion at Stamford Bridge in front of 66,000 , Stan was still a huge crowd puller. We won the match 1-0 and I remember Stan and Jimmy McIlroy(who scored the goal) ran down the clock in the last 5 minutes by the left corner flag and Chelsea just could not get the ball off them.
One of the first away matches I attended and still one of the most memorable.
