Sorry but for me you can stick the Europa as far as it will go. Absolute Mickey Mouse and meaningless and with major negative effects on teams playing in it in "home" competitions.

I love the thought of being in Europe again, but while it's in it's current overloaded league format, the Europa is not a great competition to be in, practically speaking.
Make it a straight knockout tournament again and I think it would regain a lot of its popularity with the clubs and fans. On balance, I'm pleased we're not it. I don't think it suits clubs of our size.

It's a bollocks argument
Last time we were in it we played reserve sides away ftom home with many of the first team squad not even travelling to Thun Istanbul and Valencia let alone playing
It was conveniently used as an excuse for failings in other areas

Meaningless in the way that winning it gets you a Champs League spot you mean???? and given the average drop in positions in the league is only 3 places, i'd hardly call it a "major negative effect" so we can't win the Prem and according to you shouldn't be trying to qualify for the Europa....so are we only in this business now to play for the FA cup and League cup from now on? once qwe get knocked out of those shall we just give up on the season? sorry mate but you're talking out of your arse!

Meaningless, I doubt you'd be saying that if we were in it, or even won it, I'd love to be in it again. The tiredness argument is crap, they are pro athletes, they should be able to handle a few extra 90mins and some first class travel.

It needs to go back to a straight knockout format, it's mad playing all those games, by the time you get to the knockout stage your league form has already suffered. I am pretty sure managers/clubs would take it more seriously if it went back to a straight knockout and even if it were played on Tuesday and Wednesday nights the same as champions league. Having said that, i wouldn't mind us being in it again.

Isn't Europe our goal for next season? Or should we just strive for mediocrity?

From a personal point of view would love to do Europe again, only managed Thun and Valencia last time and had a fantastic time, would love to do more.
From a Stoke point of view would probably cost us at least 3 places in the league, which probably adds up to more money than we would make from a decent Europa run.

Went to Ajax in 75 and Istanbul and Valencia last time. Ok so we may turn out a reserve side, it may affect our league form but you can't beat days out like those. Memories that will live forever. Bring it on Hughsie

I still don't understand exactly why the Europa League is held in such low esteem in England but is valued highly everywhere else.
Is it beacuse it's played on Thursdays?
I loved our Euro experience last time, really enjoyed the games.I thought the quality of those games were higher than almost all the Premier League games we had that season. Hughes is looking to build up a squad for Europe,I think he would relish the challenge.

Depends on the group, last Europa the group was from siberia and the middle east. I'd prefer the more traditional euro destinations, belgium, spain etc

I kind of like the group stage format - chance for your club to give a decent account of itself and it means at least 3 away days to choose from. I don't really get the whinging of clubs like Spurs and Liverpool about the amount of games - same format as the Champions league which they so desperately want to qualify for but have no chance of competing in, whereas a semi-decent Spurs side should have a good chance of winning the Europa.
For sides with smaller budgets like ourselves, WHU, Saints etc then yes it's a bit more of a stretch and you need a few extra bodies which is fine in the year you're actually in it, but then you get lumbered with players for a few years afterwards. Certainly the remuneration associated with the Europa league doesn't cover that by any means.
The prospect of 3 home and away ties to get to the groups, and the associated starting the season in early July, is the big fucker and I suspect plays a bigger role in fucking up your season than having the extra games to contend with, especially given that sides in the Europa send out the C team for the domestic cups which mitigates things to some extent.

The format has its faults but thankfully now the winners get CL qualification. Why has it take Uefa so long to make this ruling but at least its done now and maybe the 2 out of the usual top 6 might take it more seriously.Lets face it I am not sure Liverpool or Spurs are good enough to challenge the top 4 so this is their main chance of CL. The media and the top clubs bitch and moan about the competition. If the top clubs don't want to be in it as it effects their league performances then let them decline the invitation and allow the next team in the league to accept. I think that maybe next season as the cups get dominated by the top 6 we will almost certainly see 7th qualify and maybe even 8th if either of the European cups are won by a Prem team. Its the clubs ambition to play in Europe again shame not all our fans feel the same
