Anyone remember this?? How long is it since it closed? Didn't it end up as that nightclub Metropolis?
Loved it, looked small from outside, well it was just one long alleyway with I think, only one kiosk at the end. Had a good sized screen mind. Can remember my dad taking me for the first time back in '76 to see King Kong (Jeff Bridges) then many years later, saw loads there; Terminator, Commando, Big Trouble In Little China, Invaders From Mars all come to mind.
I remember that about halfway along the alleyway, they used to have a display case and they used to fill it with props that tied in with the movie on show (only ever one movie as they only had one screen). I remember when they showed Terminator, they had a dummy and really did a good job making it up like Arnie. Had the leathers, boots, glasses, studded gloves even the guns etc, it was really convincing. They always seemed like they were proper film fans! They also used to do allnighters where they would show things like all the mad max movies or the first two alien films.
I really miss the old cinemas, way better than the plastic multiplexes of today. Loved the ABC and the old Odeon that is now the Theatre at Hanley. The old days of queuing around the block for big films! I always used to look up at the old dome in the Odeon with a sense of vertigo. I remember well the bar at the ABC where you got a cracking pint of Carling, particularly remember the old lady that used to serve, god bless her, she's probably passed away now?
Great places, happy memories, all gone now, swept away

im sure the kiosk was literally facing you as you got to the end of the alley, I cant remember any 'outside' doors, not sure how they actually locked it up at the end of the night. It's like the open alley was a part of the cinema, I think after you bought your ticket at the kiosk, I think you turned right and went up a couple of steps into the screening room itself. It was proper old school, like a place for proper film fans, not just the casual weekend crowd.

Front door was on the High Street. A long corridor took you to the ticket kiosk then it zigged and zagged right and left to the screen auditorium. There were a couple of places along the corridor that they set up 'costume displays' linking into the films. I still remember a mannequin dressed in a black cap sleeve t-shirt with little metal star studs around the the sleeves when I went to see Grease. There was an outside alleyway that ran alongside the cinema that you were let out into after the film finished, or, let into through the 'exit' door by your older mates if there was a bluey showing

It was Metropolis in my days in the area. The long thin entrance remained and there were two floors inside and a big skinhead named Dave on the door. Must have been empty for 15 years now.

Used to love the Savoy. Saw Return of the Jedi, Indiana Jones and Ghostbusters amongst countless others. Proper childhood defining films. Saw Vice Versa and Short Circuit as part of the SPACE scheme as well.

I can only remember going once or twice. The auditorium itself was small compared to the ABC, Odeon or Gaumont up Hanley duck, but the rake at the back of the Savoy was really steep. It was like a skateboard half pipe and the back row of seats went almost up to the ceiling. In my mum's day I think it was referred to as "the bug hut" as well.

Note the coffered barrelled vaulted ceiling.
