Hoddle was decent but he was also an egotist who was terrified one of the 'flair' players might take the glory away from him.

In my lifetime of what I can remember best to worst.....
Venables Hoddle Eriksson Capello Keegan Hodgson McLaren
I can sort of remember Taylor's England in about 1993 but not enough to judge.

Revie, Taylor, Capello, Keegan, McLaren ALL far worse than Hodgson
Revie dropped Hudson after he played a blinder against World Champions West Germany. Picked a squad of 81 players and the first thing he did was get them to play bingo and carpet bowls. Beat that!

Capello was way better than Hodgson imo. I actually quite liked Capello.

True but the players seemingly like Hodgson and he can't get them playing a good tune. Which is worse. Which is a shame because attack wise we have a lot of talent.

Graham Taylor. Steve Mclaren.
Hoddle was a good manager, far better than the dinosaur we currently have.

What the hell did Capello do bar fill his boots with the Fa's money, Hodgson presided over our worst ever performance at the WC Finals and I'm sure one of our local pub sides would go close to qualifying out of our group for next years Euros, Brolly man omg as was Keegan, Hoddle's own ego did for him plus his belief in the fairies. Taylor was a complete clown took over World cup semi finalists and transformed us into arm chair viewers, shafted Lineker and Waddle. Revie Hudson say no more. Robson was shit for years but due to player revolt dropped on a winning formula in 1990 and with the Germans good fortune we would have won it that year. Venables was class in his one chance to shine until the boys club that run our game removed him for non football reasons.
Ramsey won the Worlds so No 1

Keegan gets off very lightly in these discussions. He wasn't the worst manager in the world, but he wasn't cut out for English football. Eliminated from Euro 2000 by Romania after beating a Germany team in crisis was bad enough, but there was also a serious danger of not qualifying for the World Cup with the way things were going.
To be fair to him, he did the decent thing in the end and he did genuinely care about England, he was just no good as manager. Eriksson inherited a right old mess.

We've had some shockers but never have we had a manager we expect so little from as Hodgson. How he kept his job after the WC is beyond me.

The crappest has been MacClaren but despite his undeniable crapness I sympathise with him. He has since admitted he knew along he wasn't cut out for the job but what could he do? He's an English football manager, how could he turn down it down? He done for by the clamour for and Englishman in the job. Who else was there?? He won the League cup in 2004 and was the first English manager won a trophy since Brian Little in 1996.
Keegan's demise should have marked the demise of the P word. His expression of P was useless at international level. It's easy to nullify this kind of cliche ridden bluster. He's a dam fine bloke though.
Revie was frustrated because he couldn't re-create the spirit he built at Leeds with England. He failed with England but what gets forgotten is he really was one of the great post war managers. Outside of Leeds though he will only ever be known as Don Readies.
Remember what a ridiculous job it is. England, apart from a couple of hours in 1966 have always been regarded across the globe as an average fair to middling half decent up and downer team. With good form and a bit of luck we might reach a quarter final. Yet even the good managers have received huge stick. The personal vendetta waged against Bobby Robson was one of the most vicious in the history of the gutterpress. Alf suffered it too... when Poland knocked us out of 1974 the press where dancing around the corridors of Wembo triumphantly declaring "We've got him now".
The nature of English football doesn't make for international success. Who the manager is doesn't matter as much as the culture of the game. And that's that.

Main reason - not picking Alan Hudson after two games including that stunning performance you mention against West Germany.

That second halfagainst Romania summed up Keegan. With Romania needing to score Keegan was urging England to up pace. At the same time Jenei was telling his team to slow down and stay patient knowing their chances would come.

Hodgson isn't the worst England manager ever. Objectively, he isn't. He's not great by a long way, he's not suited to high-profile management jobs, fares better as the scrappy underdog, but there just isn't an argument that he's the worst.
If it wasn't for bitterness over the Ryan thing, would anybody seriously be arguing he was?
