Awful awful pundit. Was surprised when I found out he played for us (before my time).

I've lived outside Stoke for all of my adult life - do I still sound like I come from Stoke? Yes. Do you have to get rid of your accent to prosper in football punditry? No. Do you have to be a smarmy little London-centric arsewipe to get on at the beeb? Maybe. The accent is still there, he does "posh stoke" - the potteries comes out when he gets excited. Due to my heart condition, I've decided to find him funny rather than annoying. Posh stoke is actually worse than pure Stokie or Received Pronunciation (for which he strives) as it's neither one thing or the other. CID policemen from stoke do the posh version, - when they are in court, or talking to your parents. In those little cell rooms they're pure potteries

I remember when he used to come to my school, St Peter's (backs right up against the old Boothen End) to give us kids footie lessons. He always seemed like a nice guy back then. These days though, he seems to be trying to distance himself from his Stokie roots. And for that, he's definitely a borderline cunt.

Gareth was a very good player for Stoke and as stated above, why the need to slag him off? I used to enjoy watching him play, racing from our box, down the line, turn in, shoot, score.GARTH CROOOOOKS. I also lost my very hard core Potteries accent, it comes back and can be picked out amongst my mongrel tones..unlike Garth, who now works for the BBC and is a broadcaster. His voice is his job. I've not looked at his team of the week yet, but who would I put in? Maybe Arnie or nFonzie, but it's no big deal and who would these players have to replace? P.S. Was it just my view or was Garth prone to falling down to much in the rain? Same here on the accent front. But, like Garth, you can still pick up my origins through the sibilance that is peculiar to Stokies. Certain consonant combinations always betray a Stoke accent. It's the same with Mark Bright, another one who has lived in the south for most of his adult life. To my ears, Garth doesn't talk in a way to disguise his accent; it's a natural result of living out of Stoke for more than thirty years and some BBC coaching. He sounds very much like a Stokie to me, just less pronounced. And, ultimately, what does it matter?

I don't give two thirds of a shit about Garth Crooks to be honest, but there does seem to be a discrepancy here. Garth has aligned himself closely to Spurs. It's in his best interests, they are a big club based in the right part of the world and by hook, crook or whatever he has carved himself out a comfy little niché in the media based on what at face value is a rudimentary inderstanding of the modern game and the occassional penchant for a bit of "controversy". Danny Higginbotham barely got a fucking sniff at United but you cannot shut him up about them now. Why? Because it's in his best interests to do so. Most people outside Stoke don't give a shit about us, a fact buoyed by our frankly dreadful lack of exposure across the popular press and media outlets. You do what you need to in order to keep the pennies rolling in. Particularly when you have the basic materials Crooks, Higginbotham & Savage have, given their peers (Gary Neville & Jamie Carragher) are currently tearing up the pundit rulebook. In the words of Disney's frozen, stop fucking moaning. Most people IN Stoke don't give a shit about us...at least half the population of North Staffordshire support The Shit/Bin Dippers/Chelsea/Arsenal etc etc

Of course the average yank can't tell the difference. They usually think we're Australian.

Yawn. Think I'll add to the boredom though. Garth was a young revelation who helped greatly to get us back to the top flight after the relegation in 1976. The best of a group of hone grown players, he left for Spurs where he went on to win two FA Cups and a EUFA Cup winners medals. He retired through injury with a very respectable scoring record to become the first black player to be appointed chairman of the PFA and was awarded OBE for services to football. He seems to be hated by many Stokies because, unlike every other ex player pundit who Never stop talking about their grass roots Garth doesn't. And, shock horror, only 35 years after leaving the Potteries he's lost his accent the treacherous traitor. Garth you are a legend. Surely you have described why he isn't a legend. Bell end more like

Garth is the reason why I have been a massive supporter of this club since 1978. My Dad worked with his Mum and we got a couple of free tickets off her. Stoke beat Spurs 3-1 and Garth scored 2. The rest is history ????

I like Garth Crooks. Bit of a luvvy at times but a bit of eccentricity doesn't do any harm.

What I don't understand is why so many Stokies criticise Carth's accent. Yes, his accent is no longer the accent he spoke with when he grew up in North Staffordshire. Nor is the accent of Peter Coates! If people can forgive Peter Coates his lack of a broad Potteries accent, why on earth should they worry about Garth's accent? It is almost exactly 50 years since I left North Staffordshire. My parents moved to Cambridge the year I left school and I have never lived in North Staffordshire since. I have lived and worked in London, Crewe, Wolverhampton and Plymouth before retiring to Cumbria just over 10 years ago. Naturally, my accent has changed and diluted over those 50 years and no one has ever commented on my accent, or the lack of it, when I have came back to watch Stoke matches. The interest in Garth's accent mystifies me. Peter Coates and myself can count ourselves very lucky that Stoke fans have been so kind to the way we speak!

It's what you say, not what accent you say it in. And with Garth, unfortunately, it's what he says that is at the root of the problem, indeed just about everything he says.

It's nothing to do with the accent with Garth that gets me ( says the poster who sounds decidedly Danny Dyer out loud ) ,it's more to do with the way he's whitewashed making his name at Stoke City off his CV .
Lee Dixon & Crooks are two pundits who like to fool people into believing they were 'one (big )club men' , I prefer Linekar & Savage etc ( tin hat on ) who remain rather misty eyed towards Leicester & Wrexham as their hometown teams of choice ,while acknowledging they actually plied their trade a much higher level.

Garth was a wonderful little player for Stoke and Spurs. I have met him a couple of times at Spurs events. They say you should never meet your heroes (I loved Garth Crooks & Stevie Archibald partnership of the early 80's. Second only to Jimmy Greaves and Alan Gilzean for me at Spurs) but he was a strange little so and so. Nothing wrong with it but is he a homesexual?
