from the Summer Transfers Thread for anyone that skims it or doesn't bother with it
SL&P claim he's the man we'll bring in to fight it out with Butland should Begovic go, with fee and contract already sorted

Makes good sense. Decent keeper why pay big money for a potential deputy GK. Better off spending the big money on nailed on starters.

Don't rate Bogdan at all. A massive flapper. Surely a backup to Butland if Bego leaves?

Begovic is replaceable after his performances this year. I'd be more concerned with N'Zonzi going.

He's ok but he really is a Championship standard goalkeeper.

Bolton fans speak very highly of Amos who has been on loan from United. He's available too.

Surely a backup to Butland if Bego leaves? would have thought so mate and i'd imagine he'd be happy with that as it's certainly a step up from where he is at the moment and let's not forget that Bego was fecking awful at times when he first came along to us as well..the idea that we'd have had him as first choice over Sorro when he joined would have been enough to give me nightmares. turned out to be absolute quality in the end though i trust Les to get it right personally and will be happy with his judgment on it

Local rag round here is reporting today that Derby are trying to sign Marshall from Cardiff who i'd have thought would have attracted premiership clubs after his performances last season.

My first thought is that we would be weakening our hand and we'd have two fairly inexperienced keepers on the books with about 200 appearances between them.
My second thought is that it's a free replacing a big money outgoing move so that ticks the box given our recent activity.
I think I'd be underwhelmed but of course I would give the lad my full support and hope he would prove an excellent acquisition.

To be fair to the lad he was brilliant last night against Bournemouth, swept up everything that was put past the very slow Bolton defense which stopped Wilson from having a hat trick.
The 3 goals he conceded were unfair to him. Never seen him on a regular basis except when he played for Bolton in the prem for a while when Jaaskellainen was injured.
I'd be happy to have him as a covering/cup keeper but then I wouldn't be all that happy at Butland being First Choice in front of him as I don't feel he is, or will ever be top 10 quality. Just doesn't seem to be improving no matter where we send him on loan or how much experience he is gaining from Asmir or Sorro.

We'll just have to wait and see...

Don't forget we need 3 keepers. I'd say he's coming in to fight out for 2nd choice.

Just personal opinion if nothing else as I never feel comfortable with him in goal at any point he is on the pitch. I never saw anything about his performances before we signed him to suggest he was going to turn into the next England keeper as was suggested. Despite that though if he replaces Begovic for the last few weeks of the season as I think he should due to his poor form and then next season when Bego leaves then I'll be supporting him everytime and afford him the time to grow into the role on a regular basis. As I know it won't be easy to drop into a Premier League team regularly without being nervous.

He got slated a bit at Blackburn in the FA Cup game I noticed but that game was a kind of collective nightmare for us. I saw some of the press dubbed him "jittery Jack" at one stage of his England U21 spell too but we seem to be through that. The part I don't really get is that is how just at the moment that Bego has started to drop an occasional clanger Butland has somehow become "ready". Of course he may be but I hope its not just wishful thinking this apparently happy coincidence

Of course he may be but I hope its not just wishful thinking this apparently happy coincidence I'm not going to defend Bego blindly as he has been a lot worse this year than previous years, but is still one of the best keepers in the league and will continue to save us points even if his errors (which unfortunately keep happening) are costing us each time. For whatever reason Bego hasn't been as good, whether it be due to the World Cup last summer, or the interest which turned his head a couple of times previously or if he just hasn't been quite at the level he has been over the last couple of years. I don't know if Butland is ready as I don't see him day to day and I wouldn't expect that he is ready, I personally wouldn't have him as first choice next season anyway, the only problem for Mark Hughes being that he then needs to balance having the best keeper possible playing and not losing Butland in the event that he may not be getting the football he wants in the premier league which is where he wants to play. All I'll say is I wouldn't want to be in MH's shoes having to balance all of the difficult factors around our #1 jersey. And to keep to the subject... Bogdan would be decent enough as cover at least
