I'd always assumed he would move to a Championship club when he left us. Be interesting to see how many other clubs are interested. I have a feeling he would prefer to stay within a daily commute from Stoke.

Well, Birmingham and Blackburn are said to be interested so they don't appear to have been put off. I think if I was interested in a player I would look at his whole career disciplinary record rather than just his last loan spell. Wilko hasn't been sent off as many times as some people think! No saint - but probably not as bad as his reputation.

I went on the Millwall forum and they seemed to love him. Hard as nails, threw in tackles left right and centre, seemed to fit their team well. I'm surprised he didn't stay longer, although perhaps that was decided by Mark Hughes rather than them.

Think it was a financial issue with Millwall rather than an ability one, wasn't it?

I love Wilko but why did we give him a new contract when it was clear the manager didn't fancy him?

Why? It's not like Wilko's been on forty grand a week for the last fifteen years is it?
The club have a recent history of looking after the players who've helped them get where they are today.
It's probably one of the reasons why there's such a good atmosphere around the place.

Because it's just weak, if that's the case we might as well never let the poor chicken leave and keep him in employment until he's 70.
He would have found another club a doddle, it wasn't like he had been long term injured or anything.

Yeah let's give him a contract so he can sit in the stands every week. He wants to leave to play football, we want him to leave so we can free up wages. keeping somebody around because they have played for us a while is sheer lunacy.

I have no reason to doubt what you say, in which case the club/business seems to be run as a charity case. Does Denise know?

From what I can gather the Coates family look after people who serve them well, whatever business it is.

You need enough players for a 25 man squad, and some of them are not going to play unless there are tons of injuries and the regulars are being rested. If not Wilko, then another player who is going to have to spend most of their time in the stands and/or on loan.

A popular and cheap member of playing staff that wanted to stay and could cover both full back positions in a crisis.
It's not the strangest bit of business I've ever seen.

There are many reasons we are respected as a classy club, perhaps this is one of them.

What by giving a bloke who has been paid handsomely by the club for 10 years more money for doing bugger all when he could walk into another job? I don't buy it.

Hughes was never going to seriously consider him.

Crikey, it's hardly a major issue is it?
He was handed a one year contract with the option of another year last spring. It was the right and decent thing for the club to do, especially as he'd just had a pretty bad injury - just as it was the right and decent thing to do with Rory Delap and will be with Peter Odemwingie. The club aren't going to give him the twelve month option and he'll be off.
He's been a great player for us and served us well for fifteen years. When you think about some of the rank bluffers we've pissed money away on during that time, the extra twelve months he's had isn't worth losing any sleep over.
