I don't know about players, but most of the refs in the prem have been stealing a living for years. Some of them should be fucking locked up.

Not read the article but as far as I'm concerned f@ck 'em.
Everyone has heard about the statistic of more soldiers killing themselves since the Falklands war than actually died fighting in the war. These guys play a sport for gods sake!

These guys play a sport for gods sake! It doesn't make it any easier for them to adjust after retirement. This is something they've been working for since they were young children most likely, that has been their entire life. Everything has been built around their profession, the whole lifestyle is governed by it - not financially or anything, things like having to be disciplined and having an absolute focus on something. Then one day, it's gone, and some players can't deal with that. Some overindulge, turn to drink, get into trouble. It's essentially a whole new life. Regardless of profession, a change like that is going to have some kind of effect. The article covers such things, perhaps you should read it before making ill-informed comments. |

Interesting article. I never understood why some people who love the game so much don't just go into coaching. Even at the county level, if you really can't live without football then why not go manage or be an assistant for your hometown or something?

It's why you have to admire the ones like Danny Higgnbotham, Garth Crooks and Dave Kitson who've made a concerted effort to establish themselves in professions related to the sport.

There are teams up and down the country who would jump at the prospect of having an ex-pro coaching. I'm no ex-pro, but I give up a few days a month to coach local kids the joys of the game. They might not go on to be the next Gordon Banks, Stan Matthews or Geoff Hurst - but at least they're given a chance to enjoy themselves and have a bit of fun. Maybe if more ex-pros gave up some of their time and put it back into the local communities that supported them for a decade or more, it might just lead to a better national team. |

If you have half a brain you work out what you need to do after football, wherever your strengths lie. You must mave to have some to even make a fist of it in professional football

It's astounding that in the modern age some players are still dumbfounded as to what course their lives should take after they stop playing. There is more information available than ever yet some of them are still rudderless
