Why on earth would Gerrard want his last premier league game to be in front of thousands of knuckle draggers spewing abuse at him without having any particular reason why. It seems many football fans find it impossible to appreciate a player who has been a modern day legend and give him the respect he deserves. You can still do this at the same time as giving 100% to supporting SCFC. For christ sake can't we show a little bit of class?

How many posts do we see on here where people are asking for more respect to be shown to Stoke City Football Club for their achievements and yet some of those same people want to disrespect Gerrard in front of the Worlds media and millions of fans, that makes a lot of sense.

Tin hat on I have always liked Gerrard he has been a loyal servant to the club he supported and as kid in his home town and dragged them through some tough games like the FA Cup and Champions League finals.Always gave his best for England. Ok he has been earning great sums of money but that's not his fault, given the chance we would all love to play for our own team and earn shit loads of money.I get the fact it's banter regarding his slip and all that and have no problem with singing it but i personally respect him as a footballer.Outside of football i couldn't give a shit what he does or has done.Let's put it this way if he did a Lampard type loan i would be more than happy to have him at Stoke for 6 months or so.One club man. Go on then now abuse me.

He doesnt deserve a guard of honour from Stoke fans, but likewise he doesnt deserve to get dogs abuse for absolutely no reason!
I like to think most of our fans have some intelligence and respect, but I guess thats too much to expect

A guard of honour is not given by the Stoke fans, it would be given in this case by the Liverpool and Stoke players and I think Stoke would be respected if such a tribute was paid.

There is a difference here between Gerrard and Michael Owen.
Michael Owen was retiring from professional football. Steven Gerrard is leaving Liverpool, on a Free Transfer to go and earn mega-bucks in the USA.

I'll be very surprised if he doesn't bow out at Anfield - leaving all those Scousers who booked hospitality suites at the Brit for the week after crying into their Carlsberg and prawn butties.

We can't moan and moan about media perception of the club and expect it to change if we go and do shit like this, regardless of what you think of the bloke he's an England legend and an even bigger Liverpool legend, chances are by the time the kick-off whistle blows everything league-wise will be decided so why shouldn't we applaud the guy?
I question the mentality of some Stoke fans sometimes, we don't have to start a Gerrard fan club but we should at least show some respect for an England legend

How about a compromise?
Guard of honour. Polite applause by the fans before the game. Then full on abuse during the game as we normally do? As long as we don't cross the line (which we haven't with Gerrard)that should be fine?
or: Just ignore him & support Stoke?

Don't like him, don't partcularly rate him, will be giving him dogs abuse as normal.
Liverpool would have been better off cashing in years ago instead of making the same mistake England did in trying to build a team around a player who doesn't have the brain for it.
Cheer up Stevie G Oh what can it mean to cost your team the title and then fuck off and leave
where's your title where's your title where's your title Stevie G you haven't got one you could've had one but you slipped up Stevie G

I'd like to think we'd take the high road. Unfortunately we do have more than a few "knuckle draggers" (not thousands) that will make sure that this doesn't happen.

89 minutes of partisan vitriol, followed by a sporting round of applause when he gets subbed at the end...... Agree, give him hell for 89 minutes,Liverpool Mafia style, then a rousing applause to leave the field till the following season when he back playing for some shit prem team who offer him loads of money.

If he plays I would take the view that by all means give him some humorous stick, but ultimately at FT he deserves a standing ovation from all 4 sides of the stadium

Up until his semi retirement in the USA , Gerrard has been a combative , whole hearted, one club player , the consummate modern pro ,not an angel and far from a devil incarnate , he's remained at his favourite club and although he's occasionally flirted with a move to win a Champions medal ,he's ultimately remained loyal to HIS club . I'm all for giving him banter as part of a potential last appearance at the Britannia , but aren't we becoming dangerously close to unsavoury vitriolic abuse with the way we're ranking up the potential targeting of a former England Captain ? Personally for all their faults and hang ups the typical Liverpool crowd is ( generally ) very knowledgable and generous in its appreciation of visiting teams ( apart from United ,obviously ) I for one intend to give Gerrard the pantomime villian welcome he deserves ,AS an opposing player , but certainly not the abuse some seem to have lined up . Also !at the final whistle ,I intend to show the class & apprecition a good pro deserves ,in a way similar to what I'd like Ryan Shawcross to receive IF he were to play his entire career at Stoke and play his final game at say ....Anfield . The sad irony isn't lost on me that this particular 'post' is appearing along side another , headed 'classless Stoke City' Fantastic post mate. Well said

The last time I remember him having a good game for England, we beat the Germans 5-1.
Anyways, we'll get chance to say goodbye to him again next year when he's on loan at the Etihad.

He won't play because he'll bow out at Anfield, but I feel like a bit of a moan, so sod it.
I don't really see why he should get any adulation from us. For me, it should be just the same as any other time that we've played Liverpool - not particularly singling Gerrard out, but letting him know that he hits like a girl and never really plays at his very best in an England shirt whenever he happens to be taking a set piece, attempting to referee the game or do something twattish.
This 'class' rubbish gets on my nerves. It's new age, plastic internet supporter rubbish. Apparently it's a classless hate crime for supporters to jeer one of their former players, or for a former player to celebrate after scoring against his own club. Whenever there's even the tiniest bit of sentiment or history involved there should be mutual applause and hugs and tears or else it's just not 'class'. Utter rubbish. When Ramsey played against us for the first time after breaking his leg, lots of pundits suggested that we should cheer him and roundly applaud him whenever he touched the ball, because that would be 'class'. If you don't conform to some slightly backwards and hypocritical social niceties in football then you're a monster.
Truth be told, I don't particularly mind Gerrard. He doesn't seem like a complete tosser and he was apparently very good with Ryan when he joined the England squad in 2010. However, at the end of the day, Gerrard has done nothing for Stoke (obviously) and nothing for England, so I don't see why I should be expected to cheer him before and during a game in which he would be the captain of the enemy. I might clap him off if he's substituted before full time. He's been paid hundreds of thousands a week to play for his hometown club, who he agreed to leave in order to get even more money at Chelsea, before he was (allegedly) put off the move by some gangster friends of the family. He's been a very good player and he'll always be well regarded by Liverpool supporters, but he'll never been an England great, or an all time world great. He's just not worth all the fuss surrounding him.

So lets say both sets of players line up and clap as Gerrard comes out and four sides of the ground applaud, then the battle commences.
What in heavens name are people on here procrastinating and whinging about for something that takes a few seconds to do and shows the guy a bit of respect. On another thread a guy is calling us classless, just a tiny few of you on here don't half give him some ammunition.

Always come across as a decent enough pro has Gerrard.

Ill definitely applaud him, before, during (when he inevitably gets substituted, if he plays) and after the game.
A guard of honour is ridiculous though.
