When I was a kid, seeing a hare run across a field was an uncommon but not unusual sight, but I've not seen one for maybe 20 years. Has anyone seen a hare recently?

It's all down to the destruction of habitat , the ripping up of traditional farmland and chemical sprays .
The small matter of building more houses everywhere has had a significant effect to . Hares like quiet wide open spaces .....they are not like their cousins the rabbit who can cope much better with mans impact on the planet ,
Hares need much bigger open undisturbed acreage .

Personally ....I'd rather watch hares in a field , than 5000 foreigners being artificially inseminated into the British countryside.
It's more natural .

I'll tell you one thing though the people who live in the countryside in Romania have a lifestyle very close to the one you aspire too , largely self sufficient, lots of bartering , lots of farmers markets , a very sustainable way of life and a great sense of community , my wife's grandmother lives way out of town in a tiny village and gets cut of by huge snowfall the village kids dig away the snow and pop round daily to see if she's ok

Those days are gone forever over here.
I don't expect life to stand still , but equally I don't expect 500,000 immigrants a year .

I agree , but they definitely need help with post communist recovery , all the soviet satellite states were stripped bare and still have corrupt officials lining their pockets , the aid from EU is much in evidence though , fucking great motorways being built with no cars on them

I've always seen hares on the lonelier western edges of Staffordshire. Woodseaves, standon etc. last time I saw one was about four years ago near to woodseaves. I once had the pleasure of witnessing Hares boxing near Baldwins Gate. Though I have to say, has anyone seen a parliament of Hares?

Some mates & me took our kids camping in Oxon a couple of years ago & on the way back from a days drinking at the local fate, we disturbed one whilst traipsing through the farmer freshly cut wheat stubble. Great sight

All the hares seem to have moved to Wales, during my daily "international" commute I see none whilst in Cheshire but plenty once over the border...

Well there's the power of The Oatcake in action - I ask a question, and the BBC does a report on the next day.

I saw two jumping around only the other day in classic 'Mad March Hare' style. Mind you, it is pretty rural out here.

Was walking on Watership Down the other day and there were loads up there. Also a Barn Owl hunting in broad daylight................... quite a sight. I killed a rabbit on Watership Down. I was on my mountain bike, travailing at speed, and a rabbit shot out and went under my back wheel. I was really confused about it at first, as I did not see what I'd hit, and that it was really strange hitting something with my back wheel, but not my front. The guy on the bike behind me, told me what happened after I stopped.

The last one I saw was at Draycott in The Clay whilst on Safari with my mate Gazman . It lay down flat right at our feet . Marvellous sight ....probably the last one I'll ever see that close.
