I'd love to see a team from the British Isles, with or without the Northern Irish, competing in Brazil but the spineless jocks (independence) and the wet Welsh F.A's. have kyboshed the idea. They are worried they will loose their Nation Statehood in the eyes of F.I.F.A. Get real boyo's you are and always will be different countries, so stop spoiling our fun and let the fans see what they want. A team made up of the best of the young talent from the length and breadth of the British Isles

Thing is they do have a point. Other national FA's have long been unhappy that UK has 4 nations & would look to force a GB/UK side (full time) on us.
We don't have any probelm playing as England,Scotland,Wales,N.Ireland normally & as GB other times but it could look like we want it both ways.

Yup some countries and fans in those countries see it as us having 4 chances of qualifying.

In answer to that my Lord B I will say San Marino, Gibraltar, Lichtenstein, Andorra, to name but a few. Olympic football is for young players and if F.I.F.A. or E.U.F.A. want to start a revolution then let them try. I've had enough of footballing politics, it's a sport and in the case of England a very financially rewarding sport. Once upon a time the Olympics were for amateurs, some of the Nation's taking part in world football are still amateur. There is not a chance in hell that F.I.F.A. could revoke the national status of Wales and Scotland, these countries have been around a lot longer than F.I.F.A

It's stupid that the Olympics have football anyway.
A sport should be in the Olympics if the Olympics will be the biggest event for that sport. Same reason, Golf, No, just No.
They make is a slightly cacky under 23 tournament with 3 over age players allowed, so it isn't seen to be competing with the WC, but all this does is mean that we don't see who is the best in the World.

Most other countries take it very seriously and as a good development tool. The same goes for the U-20 World Cup. In South America it's the second most important tournament after the World Cup.

An Olympic gold medal should prove that you are the best in the world at your sport. Not the best amateur, or youngster or whatever

Watching the USA Mens basketball team roll over everyone without breaking a sweat isn't my idea tantalizing drama. The USA Mens Hockey team, the Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid back in '80, can never happen again with professional athletes. The Olympics loses its heart and soul when you throw multi-millionaire professional athletes into the mix.

The olympics is the pinnacle of all sports, for football the olympics is nowhere near as big as the world cup, for sports like athletics, cycling and rowing it is huge and the athletes train for 4 years just to get a shot at winning, for football it is different and the fact that we arent too bothered about entering a team or not should tell you all there is to know

Americas dream team weren't really a team at all and they got beat. Athletes are now mainly professional and there is big money for certain disciplines. There are some that are lucky enough to get funded so they can train without having to get a job. Some sports could be on a amateur or junior level and still be good viewing. Tennis, golf, tiddly winks...

The Olympics loses its heart and soul when you throw multi-millionaire professional athletes into the mix. But sometimes sport isn't tantalising drama - not everything can be like Liverpool in Istanbul or Man Utd in Barcelona. Sometimes a team/player is so much better than everyone else that the competition is effectively over quickly - ala 2014 tour de France which Nibali effectively won when Contador broke his leg about 1 week in. We can't and shouldn't artificially create drama by excluding teams just because they happen to be the best by a clear margin. Others may disagree but I can also enjoy seeing an all conquering team at their peak destroy their opponents. - Barcelona is the most recent example of this I can think off - would you ban them from Champions league because they were too good.

No! But I would ban them from competing on the grounds that they are fully professional, involved in a fully professional sport. Yes they do have a junior Olympic tournament already but there are plenty of sports or games where players that are not at the top could be involved, not least golf and tennis But as for a football team from Great Britain, then yes it should be allowed for the Olympics.

Would be good to see this happen and shawcross gets picked. As captain. And Bale and Ramsay play alongside Harry Kane and someone else from England who is any good. And then them win the gold and have a big party. And Roy Hodgson turns up but they won't let him in. So he stands on the doorstep crying and Ryan wees out of an upstairs window onto Roy's head. Everybody laughs including Tony Pulis who is the GB manager. he laughs loudest.
Sorry. Got carried away for a moment.
