30th anniversary of beating Arsenal 2-0. We knew we were going down. What none of us knew was it would be our last top flight win for over 23 years.

I was there. tbh I think vast majority of Stoke fans thought we would do a Wolves & go right through to division 4. All hope was lost.

I think the late 1980s at Stoke is something Peter Coates would rather forget. In the summer of '85, talk was of dropping through the leagues. A shattering relegation, no money, no new players. Mick Mills steadied the ship, but we couldn't break above mid table.

First two seasons Mills did well to stabilise the club. But we went downhill afterwards. End of 88/89 we were going backwards scarily but Coates made a cowardly decision and offered mid table Mick a new contract. Then he had to be paid off. I wonder if the 1989 error was in his mind at the end of the 2012/13 season.

I was in the Butler Street Paddock that night. As you say who would have thought as we filed out that we would not win again in the top flight for nearly a quarter of a century And if I may be allowed a political point that is why I get so jumpy on here when I find anyone attempting to urinate on the legacy of Mr. Pulis!

It was Saturday afternoon not a night game, pulis did some good things, and don't say getting to the prem,it was Coates investment which got us there. He also wasted he'll of a lot of money, money a club of our size didn't have to waste, hence why Hughes has not been given the funds he wanted, that will change next season though as Coates realises he is not a last minute panic buyer
