I've never seen Stoke play Vale live. I'd like to experience it in my lifetime. No you really wouldn't! I am one of the "oldies" who used to regularly go to watch the Vale when they played on Monday nights or when Stoke were playing too far away, so I don't have any great antipathy towards the Vale but when it comes to playing them again, never is still too soon! I have been to a number of Vale home games where the atmosphere has been such at the end of the game that a neutral would have thought they had won and won well yet they had lost (and lost badly) and were celebrating a Stoke defeat. A Stoke defeat always seemed far more important to their mood than their own team's performance and result. Stoke v Vale is the ultimate "no-win" fixture for Stoke. If we win, no one cares, if we lose, we will hear about it for the next 100 years! To prove the point a couple of weeks ago the Saturday Sentinel had a full page article on the Autoglass defeat in 1993. Has anyone noticed that there has been an increase in the Sentivale running "when Vale beat Stoke / Vale once were better than Stoke" articles, since our "good friend" Mr Tideswell ( Vale through and through, but I'm actually a Liverpool fan) became the Editor?

I can understand in areas where there are two clubs why the supporters of the smaller club might dislike or even hate the bigger more successful club, that is human nature. I have a problem though understanding why that would be the case with supporters of the bigger club, if you see what I mean.

Vale are just irritants Like others have said I had no feelings towards Vale at all really (other than a general principle of looking out for local teams) until I went to Vale games as a kid watching Vale v whoever. At Stoke games (as a kid) Vale we're litterally never ever mentioned (why would you?) but at Vale Park Stoke was the topic of conversation regardless of what Vale were doing. If Stoke lose Vale are happy even if they lose. Whereas if Stoke win & Vale win Vale fans are not happy. There cannot be another club in the country where this is the case, not one.

Though my circumstances are different having lived in the West Mids all my life, i have no animosity to Vale at all really. I simply regard them as a kind of harmless, simpleton brother. Yes, we were treated as equals for a brief period, but the simpleton gene has proper kicked in now, and whilst we have gone to University, pulled a corker and found our dream job, they are stuck at home, licking windows and looking for something to chew.
Don't waste anger, anger eats away and suggests in some way there's an equality. Use pity sparingly and be patronising whenever possible. Our games in the North West are Liverpool, Manchester United & Manchester City. Theirs are Bury, Rochdale & Fleetwood. If they're lucky.

There has been sibling rivalry in our family since I started to watch Stoke in 1956 as an 8 year old,my brother was doing his national service in the RAF at the time ,and was an avid Vale fan, Our Dad was a Stoke fan who because of ill health could no longer attend. He was however determined that I should not be led astray as my brother was and so arranged for my Stoke supporting Uncles to take me.Over the subsequent years it is fair to say that the rivalry has been intense, we even came to blows at one stage, much to my Mothers disgust who promptly winged both of us.Over the years we have always had this banter, until recently my brother who is now in his 80th year still attended Vale home and away games, however the past year or so he has stopped going to away matches and some home games, when we met (we go for a pint about once a month) he would not even mention football.I thought at last his spirit has been broken and although he would never admit it,he has accepted that it is no use arguing any more,he just had not got a leg to stand on.Some hope, after about 4 meetings without a mention of football, after we had the 2 4-1 defeats against Citeh and Blackburn his first words at our next get together was "What the hell has happened to your shower then?".

It doesn't matter what age, Vale fans never ever lose their capacity to be small minded and resentful.

The last time I went down the Vale they were losing the game. There was about 10 minutes left as a bloke wandered up to me and asked me if was stopping until the end. I said I was as I'd got to pick the missus up from work so there as no point leaving early. He handed me a bunch of keys and asked if I'd mind locking up on my way out I've hears a rumour that because they've lost so many games at home at they've taken to wearing their shirts back to front so the Bycars think they are attacking. I'm not saying the crowds aren't very good but I turned to the bloke next to me and realised I'd need a megaphone for him to hear me. I thank you !!

okay I'm bored.
15 minutes gone and it's 0-0, all Vale at the moment 78% possession and 3 shots to nil so far.
Surely too much to hope that they lose to doomed Colchester?
Any news on the gate? A bumper one presumably with it being Bank Holiday and dare I say it a few Stokies turning up with nothing else to do!

I often intend go a Vale game but find the cost prohibitive. The cost of the ticket, soap powder to wash your clothes after, steam bath to clean yourself, exorcism to banish the evil demons and hypnotherapy to banish the memories, mount up to a fairly hefty outlay
