So you are saying Jamo that a bumbling idiot took Fulham to a European final and 7th in the PL? Yep. He had a good season at Fulham, does he need a fucking medal?I'm judging him on his England performances and they've been horsewank. If you're happy with what he's bringing good luck you. Probably not, he would have got one for getting to the final

Still, that's Geoff I guess. Go figure...

You are on weak ground here Jamo. Apart from one post about Hughes' transfer dealings at QPR I backed his appointment and have always said he was/is a good manager, in fact he would make a good England manager.
Roy Hodgson wouldn't be my first choice for England manager but am I the only poster on here who gets truly sick of our national team and manager being undermined on this board?

Not really no. Surely the news warrants even you being moderately happy if you were a "fan of Potteries football". As for you being sick of Hodgson being undermined, I really couldn't give a flying bollock.

Hodgson is a very decent mid-table club manager or manager of countries with limited aspirations.
He's a frustratingly conservative England manager who seems in thrall to the big clubs though.
Seems a decent enough chap.
I hope we move him on after the Euros though as he should've walked after the world cup.

He may be a nice guy and he's done a good job when expectations are on the floor but he isn't the right calibre to manage England and move things forward. He was a safe/cheap bet by the bottling FA. They can't afford to sack him after the ludicrous money they've paid out to previous managers so we're stuck with him. He should have walked if he had any sense of dignity after the World Cup but he didn't so we're stuck with him.

Fabio Capello won titles at club level in Spain and Italy and had a win rate with England off 66%, he was highly regarded throughout the world.
His performance with England at the World Cup Finals had people ridiculing him and in many ways it undermined his reputation as a top manager.
In my opinion there is no club manger anywhere in World football who could win a tournament with this England squad. As a nation we have always overrated our abilities in football and most other sports for that matter, when we start to accept that losing to sides like Italy is not a disgrace then we might be able to go into a tournament as real underdogs and be all the better for that.
If Stoke win, draw or lose we continue to back them, it really should be the same for the national team.

I don't disagree with much of that Geoff, but do you not think Capello brought a lot of that on himself and his performance at the finals deserved some criticism? He undid a lot of his good work. He did the same with Russia. Qualifed well but then panicked and started second guessing his tactics and selections. Fair enough about even this weak Italy side, it could've gone either way in Brazil and England actually played pretty well. But the weaknesses evident in that game weren't put right. That no-show against Uruguay was a disgrace and Tabarez knew exactly what to exploit and completely outfoxed Hodgson there. Criticising England and the manager's shortcomings doesn't mean you want them to fail.

I accept some of that rob and your criticism is constructive. Some on here though are negative regarding Hodgson because he doesn't select Shawcross and anti most players who play for United/ Liverpool etc. Fans have to try and put their club loyalties aside when talking about and supporting the national side.

We've had 2 class players since we've been in the prem that should have been picked on merit long before Ryan did eventually did get his chance.
Matty was the best left sided player in the country for a season and was over looked and left out for a player who could only make the bench at Man citeh.

I think Roys a genius for not picking Ryan for England
Means Stoke get to keep their most influential player for a generation (that's 25 years by the way) ---- longer
and all those wanting the kudos of further England caps for Ryan should keep that in mind
mind you, it would be an honor him playing for England in a couple of now meaningless qualifiers but also knowing as as a direct result,
he'd definitely go to a bigger club in the summer
Mind you - that's the sort of logic that keeps us Stokies so stunningly clever eh ?

I'd have picked Cahill and Jones for that match too. If I was the manager I would have been talking Terry to come back into the side. As sad as it is to say this as a big stoke fan, Ryan isn't good enough. Shame he cant go down the Wales route

5 wins out of 5 and top of the group, I don't think he will loose any sleep over this thread. In a below average group. Much credit for the away victory in Switzerland, as a few had that done as a point gained would be decent enough, however, Hodgson is achieving what many thought should happen anyhow. The real tests begin against superior opposition. Im still sceptical about all of that, and as such struggle to feel support towards a man who I feel has severe limitations within a job that could have endless boundaries considering the pool of talent he could choose from.

Agree completely. He didn't think Ryan was any good, called him up to satisfy the media and then sent him out after 70 minutes against one of the worlds best strikers Basically, he hung him out to dry Hung him out to dry by bringing him on at 2-1 to England, with 20 minutes to go, in a friendly? Just how easy a game does it have to be to give players debuts then? Only games against San Marino when qualification has been assured?

No I just find the idea that so many of you believe that Roy Hodgson in some sort of conspiracy plotted the downfall of Ryan Shawcross by evilly picking him in a friendly match that England were winning in when he came on. Against a team England beat in the Euro's a few months earlier. What a terrible person he must be for doing that. Honestly, just the idea of even giving debuts to players in friendlies, its sickening. What an absolute prick.

I agree the group is straight forward and now we have the Switzerland away game out of the way I think we are well within our rights to expect to end the qualification campaign with 10 wins out of 10. The pleasing thing for me though is how few goals we have conceded, after five games we've only conceded one goal so far and even that was an own goal by ourselves! If you were to place the 53 teams who are involved in the qualification campaign at the moment into an overall league table we would be ranked 1st, only ourselves and Slovakia have taken 15 points from a possible 15 and our goal difference is five goals better than theirs. If nothing else, I do think England deserve some credit for the professional way in which they've gone about their qualifying campaign so far. It's easy to say we've had mainly easy opponents but Spain have lost to Slovakia, Germany have lost to Poland and dropped points against Ireland, Holland have lost to the Czech's and Iceland, Belgium have dropped points against Wales and Bosnia and Italy have dropped points against Bulgaria and Croatia. Tomorrow night will be a very good test to see how far we have come in the nine months since the World Cup.
