I'm a day late on this but the History teacher in me can't let it go. Washington was a farmer.. I've been on his farm at Mount Vernon many times! Wasn't it more that his family owned a farm, or plantation that he inherited? I thought his family were quite wealthy and he didn't so much as farm, as was the son of an owner and inherited it all and those that actually farmed the land were slaves? So, he may have had some farming skills, but not to the level of actually doing the farming himself and his career wasn't that of a farmer who happened to join up because of the revolution. He was in fact, a serving British officer with many campaigns against the French. Not that it makes the slightest bit of difference. mind! He was a lot of things, many of the Americans were back then, almost "Renaissance Man" like. Washington got most of his money by marrying into the right family because his father died when he was young. But was real passionate about farming throughout his life. He was also a Surveyor, General, President, and after his presidency, one of the biggest producers of spirits in America.

Why are you North American Stokies letting a Manchester United fan wind you up on a thread which is supposed to be about starting a North American Stoke supporters group? Same goes for the Drunken Communist. Do you really think that he is a drunken communist? I doubt it! So, if you don't believe he is what he says he is, why should you believe he means what he says? Not like Americans to take their eye off the ball like this. I've usually found Americans to be pretty concentrated on what they are trying to achieve - even if I might not always agree with what they are trying to achieve. I can only conclude that the infiltration of Stokie blood into North America has diluted your normal clear headedness. Now get back to the point - get your club up and running - and work out a way to raise the funds to pay my expenses to get over there to be guest speaker at your first annual dinner. First annual dinner: View AttachmentJimmy, How many of those can you put away? Trying to crunch the numbers to see if we can get both you and Lakeland over here ....

Carlisle is 35 miles away and is just somewhere to go for decent shops and maybe one or two games a season if a mate drags me along.

For fuck's sake... Can we stop this bullshit and focus on Stoke in the US/North America, or the next match?!?! If I want to listen to pointless arguments, I'll get off this board and spend time with my family!!!

I'm a member of the USA Supporters Branch for one day, and already you've got me in trouble with the Head Honch. Thanks a lot. I'm done with this. George Washington wasn't a farmer, but his 'soldiers' sure were. Yes, Canada fought alongside the British in 1812. They were a British colony. And the severe thunderstorms that put out the fires and the tornado that chased you out of the city just prove that God was on our side. OK now I'm done.
I'm a day late on this but the History teacher in me can't let it go. Washington was a farmer.. I've been on his farm at Mount Vernon many times! That's a good point. I just meant he didn't go straight from the farm to the battlefield, like so many of the people who served under his command. And I was typing fast, in the middle of a heated debate.

Officers? Blimey, you guys don't do things by halves in the Americas. I don't think there's been an active Aussie supporters club for many years but I doubt they ever even had enlisted men involved let alone someone who'd been to West Point. We did nearly have our own A- League player but he ended up leaving when he couldn't find a suitable settee.

I forsee a time in the future when its officers are buried in the Arlington National Cemetery which will become a place of pilgrimage for Stokies around the world. They'll all go to see Kennedy's grave and the eternal flame and they' ll follow that with a visit to the Stokie section where each grave will have a freshly laundered red and white "jersey" as the Yanks call them.

I'm definitely interested. I run the Stoke City USA group on Facebook and am Stoke City USA ( josher71) on Twitter. I asked Adrian Hurst about starting a USA group about a year ago and he seemed to want to keep it local which is why it was kept at Stoke City: Baltimore MD for now. However, I'm glad they've had a change of heart. Please let me know if there's anything I can do.

Ok lads, In very tense negotiations with Adrian. Don't see any reason to merge with another US Stoke Supporters Club. Reason being we are spread all over the Western Hemisphere and are going to get 75+ member sooner rather than later. Not sure he appreciates how technology and the Internet has changed the world. We can do 1-2 events a year, hit a Stoke Match and SCFC is none the worse. Taxation without representation is bollocks!

Nice to see so many US fans on here... We must be going places. I wear my away kit and people all over know Stoke now, it is still weird and hard to get used too stateside. But respect is good...

"Ohh yes" i replied. She said that she likes watching United. blehhhhh!!! I really miss going to the matches but, am very grateful that we get ALL the prem games over ere live. I don't care about the glory hunters stuff that get's brought up on here alot. We want Stoke to be global, the more the merrier. Stokies ere, Stokies there.....

'Mercenaries', as they were called by the American Patriots. And 'Hessians' after the kingdom of Hesse, where quite a few originated from. A lot of contemporary writings refer to the Hessians, who were feared for their military competence and ruthlessness, particularly the cavalry detachments. I believe quite a few stayed behind after the war and bought land with their army pensions, becoming the first strain of strong German heritage in the USA's melting pot. On a separate point, one thing that always impresses me about Americans is their knowledge of their country's history. They seem much better informed than their average British counterpart's knowledge of UK history. Which suits me down the ground as a history geek and complete Americanophile (nowt dodgy, mind ). They have only got a couple of hundred years to read up on. We have got a couple of thousand...all of them with wars and battles and everything that need to be learned. Brits would have to stay at school until they were 50 to learn everything.
