I was at work at my checkout in Leek and struck a conversation with a customer a fellow Stokie about the Everton game. It was the first match I had been to as work commitments and cost stop me going more frequently.
I happened to mention how much I admired Whelan's contribution to the Everton match. He seems a good leader on the pitch something of a Regimental Sargent Major it occurred to me. The other man agreed with me and offered the view that he thought that Whelan was a better captain than Shawcross. An interesting thought.
We both thought that Wilson had a cracking game as well.

I popped over to the Everton forum after the game, one poster referred to him as Xavi esque.
Good player and solid pro.

Shawcross is a fantastic captain, wouldn't EVER consider taking the armband from him. Whelan was and is excellent though I agree

Shawcross is an excellent captain and fine calibre of person.
Whelan is a good captain, but people underestimate the work Shawcross does in holding the defence together around him.

Whelan is more vocal than Ryan and he's not afraid to bollock anyone who's out of shape. But I'd still like Ryan to be captain because of his consistency.

I see Whelan more as Shawcross right arm on the field, Shawcross has the back he has the defensive of midfield and organisation.....He has great ability to sense danger and aint shy about telling others who to keep an eye on.

Whelan made the blackburn game far worse due to his unprofessional tearing strips off players. He laid the ground for this at Man City by bollocking the same players instead of wilson. Not fit to tie shawcross boots

Not fit to tie shawcross boots ????......everything he said was spot on, they were awful....to a man,....including him..how the hell did that make the blackburn result worse??.. the form since then suggests he was dead right to make his remarks....are you sure your not just a bitter whelan hater whos frustrated cos hes playing well?

One thing I have noticed in recent games (from a game or two before the Shawcross injury) is that when Whelan has played poorly (Citeh and Blackburn) we lost - when he played well we won.
I don't think Whelan has proved that he is a better captain than Shawcross - after all our current good run of form dates back to Boxing Day and Shawcross was captain for the majority of those games. But What I would accept is that, if Whelan plays well (or if whoever plays in the defensive midfield position plays well) then the team tends to play well.
I suppose the only conclusion you can draw is that defensive midfield is a hugely important position and this applies to many teams not just to Stoke - Chelsea look a much better team with Matic in their side.
I would still keep Ryan as captain but I would have no problem if Whelan was officially made club vice captain on a permanent basis - he has earned it.

I still prefer Ryan because he doesn't let the captaincy affect his performance as much.
