www.football365.com/f365-says/9740316/Can-Mediocrity-Bring-True-Happiness-Good article from Homzy. It's obvious from reading the board that ambitions have shifted back towards winning a cup or qualifying for Europe via league placing. At the same time it is difficult to argue that not achieving those ambitions can be classed as failure, but at some stage will ambition become expectation?

Bolton Wanderers!
Great comment: Trouble is its not Newcastle or Stokes fault they are mediocre, man created football and we saw that it was good and for a time we played amongst and against other men, mano a mano. But then mans inherent greed saw that profit could be made from football, and we sold, and we bought, and we sold, and we bought until success could be bought and sold and those who were the greediest made it too expensive to compete with them, and so we watch from our lowly positions of monotony at the 6 teams at the top as they swap their Multimillion / Multibillion pound positions, we watch as the commanments change from Football Good to Football Good Profit Better and we notice we can no longer tell the difference between the farmers and the pigs anymore, and hump3 simply repeats I Must Work Harder. - hump3.

Good article.
Sad that this is as good as it's ever going to get - but that ship has sailed long ago.
And it's pretty staggering to think we're seriously competing to be the VERY best normal-sized club in England. There definitely is lots of pleasure to be had there.
To have a team with the capacity to bloody the noses of the biggest clubs in the country while finishing in the upper reaches of mid-table is great fun - and sadly this is now the absolute zenith for 80+ clubs in the league system.
I'd like to think being in this situation is special enough for us not to get blasé about - but you never know?
And you wouldn't have to be much worse than us to be in a situation where you really start to appreciate the futility of it all in the big picture.

One question: When did finishing 10th in the premier league make us mediocre. Surely out of the 92 league sides finishing 46th in the pyramid would be mediocre, or is that just what ambitions and expectations do to wrap the perception of what is mediocre.

I have to remind people who laugh and say Stoke are shit that actually we are the 10th best team in England at the moment.
