This weekend (like every weekend) i have seen some awful tackles and in the case of jedinak for palace GBH . I'm sure a lot of you have seen the picture of Irelands leg which is all over social media... and all the time I think if it had been the other way round we would never hear the end of it. How long will the thugish/rugby team tag stick for now. I'm bored of telling people I am a stoke fan , only to hear 'dirty team stoke'. Okay, rant over , back under my rock

It's true though - if Ireland had have caused actual bodily harm to a player of say Arsenal or Chelsea, frig me could you imagine the hysteria.

You make a valid point but it's actually worse than that as the general consensus is that we deserve that sort of thing because of the ridiculous (and unfounded) stigma that is attached to us still.

On Saturday on Football Focus there was some Rugby player on from up North who supports Chelsea (yep) doing the predictions
When showing a clip and talking about rugby / football differences we get a clip of Chelsea playing, yes of course, Stoke
The media love it - They are scum

Perfect video for that scenario

It's got nothing to do with football, it's because, as a relatively small, poor area with little influence, we can be kicked about!

It will never change because we are an unfashionable club. It just shows you how many people out there are so blinkered. I like the fact we get under everyone's skin.

Fair point Mark, but what can we conceivably do to change it?
Over the last two years we have played some good football, spent comparatively little and gone some distance to change the club's persona from it's perception under the darker days of the Pulis era. We should be the poster boys for a sustainable football team from the provinces yet still we are castigated as some sort of collection of orcs from the Midlands.
Anyone hear Jonathan Pearce's comment just before Crouch's goal on MOTD?, since promotion we have sold 98% of our tickets for home games. This is a fantastic, remarkable statistic, as is our commitment to affordable away travel for our supporters, our Season Ticket freezes (again) and our Chairman coming out and saying that it is vital that the latest windfall for Premier League rights cannot simply be spent on player wages, that we have to commit to the long term future fo the game. The press? Nothing.
I am extremely proud to be a Stoke City season ticket holder, and it is just a shame that because we are at the mercy of an unfavourable, predominantly Arsenal-supporting media, the hard work and effort that we put in goes unregarded.

I think it works in our favour some times. For instance Elmohamady's ludicrous comments after Saturday. Admits he hates playing at Stoke and says 'you go to Stoke and you know how they will play - long ball. It was windy and we did not enjoy the day'
Sounds like he was beaten before he turned up to me. It was an awful game but some stats suggest which team was more interested in playing football;
Shots - Stoke 17 Hull 1 Possession - Stoke 58% Hull 42% Total passes - Stoke 476 Hull 353 Passing Accuracy - Stoke 81% Hull 70% Percentage of passes that were long - Stoke 12% Hull 25%
We can only prosper if goons like Elmohamady hold these outdated views can't we?

It does us no favours in any way shape or form. I don't care either. No-one who takes the trouble to scratch beneath the veneer of media laziness/hysteria knows very well that the thuggish myth (or the West Ham Academy myth, or the Everton School of Science myth) are just that - myths. If there is any evidence to support the view that the image has a significant impact (in terms of decisions given, points won, sponsorship deals, etc) then I've yet to see it. Of course, I could be wrong and there is such evidence.

According to this morning's paper he hates playing at Stoke, trotted out the usual line about "You know what you're getting, long ball after long ball"
I know footballers aren't renowned for being the brightest but do they actually believe what tripe they come out with? We passed the ball a total of 504 times (420 short passes, 66 long passes and 22 crosses into the box) compared to Hull's 362 passes (264 short passes, 91 long passes, and 7 crosses into the box). Add the 17 shots on goal to their 1 and I can't believe he had the cheek to come out with it. Can only be a good thing though as enough managers come out with the same tired cliches to make me think we're are often underestimated which we use to our advantage.
For all the debates about long ball, short ball, tippy tappy call it what you like, I think we're mixing it up really well at the moment and getting the best of both worlds. Long may it continue.....

It will take years to change if it ever does. The media only seem to watch the top six darlings and ignore all the others. We are not the only ones to suffer; talk about Newcastle and a video of some dickhead with his top off in artic weather will be shown.
It's ridiculous and lazy journalism but as we are not a large centre of population why should we expect them to change. The only thing to do is to enjoy our club's achievement and hope that team's coming here continue to ferl intimidated.

For what it's worth, as a neutral, here's how I 'currently' see the club. It's an honest opinion so I hope I don't get abused........I have respect for you for staying in the PL since 2008. The team plays as a team and always seems to give of their best. The fans are honest, committed and genuinely passionate about the team. However, I still see you as being an unexciting club. Why? It is hard to shake off that image of the football played under Pulis. He did wonders for the club but the football itself didn't appeal to any neutral. The long throw ins with the towel being used to dry Delap's hands. The general time wasting under Pulis (his teams are all notorious for it- WBA were criticised for it on Saturday) and the physical, long ball game which is how I and most people used to see it anyway. As with any reputation/stereotype it will take MH a long time to get rid of that. It's not going to disappear in a couple of seasons. Even now though, the team still plays with some of those traits that don't appeal to the neutral fan/pundit. You, along with Chelsea, have the tallest team. The long ball is still 'put in' for Crouch as shown in his last few goals. You have physical players who do throw their weight around. That's fair enough but it's not appealing or going to be exciting for the neutral. It can't be helped but the constant 'wind' that seems to be there at every home game doesn't do much to encourage fluent football. So whilst I don't see you as being a dirty team as such, I think of you as being solid and physical, well organised with a good will to win attitude. However, I don't see your footballing style as being exciting but you're not on your own where that's concerned. Also, I don't think people in football have as big a 'downer' on you as you seem to think either.

Also, I don't think people in football have as big a 'downer' on you as you seem to think either. Your post illustrates the problem. Look at your description of Crouch's recent goals, it couldn't be any further from the truth but you have convinced yourself that they are from long balls. We haven't got many tall players left who feature every week anymore and subsequently we play some of the fewest amount of long balls in the divisions. We are also yet to have a player red carded in the league this season and if anything we aren't physical enough. Herein lies the problem, you try and look at the reasons based on nothing at all but 5 minutes on Match of the Day or by listening to Talksport or something similar. It's lazy and ill founded but does highlight the fact that football fans love jumping on bandwagons as you (albeit in a moderate way) have just done.

If the glory hunter teams fail against us, then its easy to use the cliché that they were kicked off the park; the lower teams that we out muscled them, hoof ball whatever. it doesn't matter - what doesn't kill us makes us stronger - so the media, other professionals having a go all serve the purpose of making us stronger; and that's the point, survival in the prem - so, we don't want to be recognised as a pretty tippy tappy team, we need to be the orcs at the party, the neanderthals from the pots etc etc BTW, anyone notice how TP is now a recognised footy expert & a media darling? wonder why that is????

Long may we be the kind of team and support that others don't like.

Myhill for Hull in a state of utter confusion not knowing whether to kick the ball to touch for a Rory Delap throw in or backwards for a corner. Pissed myself for weeks thinking about that.....
