If he had all this things he'd be compared to Messi for Christs sake! What is your point exactly?! Sent from my GT-I8190N using proboards My point is exactly he's got non of them. A good solid pro no more no less. But he's better in the air than any of them. Better at hold up play. Linking the play. He's got at least as good a first touch as any. Has played more international games than any of them and scored more at that level. Picking the best attributes of a bunch of your favourite players over the years and saying he doesn't have them is frankly ridiculous. Sent from my GT-I8190N using proboards

Do you think that's because he never wanted him of because once he'd got him it turned out he was knackered beyond hope though? Personally I think the latter. Doesn't sit well with all the research into player DNA and the rest of it our former leader claimed does it? Was it a secret at the time that Palacios was a shadow of the Wigan player? No it wasn't but there again if he wasn't a bit of a gamble he wouldn't have been signing for Stoke or anyone else for £8M. I say to this day at the time of the deal his signing made more sense than the Crouch deal. It was a dogs home signing that went the wrong way if we'd have managed to rehabilitate him it would have been another turd polished.

In hindsight it's hard to say Crouchy wasn't worth the money, but as many have already said it was what we had to pay for his friend that makes this deal a bad one!

I think that's decidedly different from not wanting him at all. I think he wanted them both and was happy for us to pay for both.

A quick look at wiki - if it's right - and Crouch has scored 41 goals for us so far. Then there's the dozens of times he's cleared corners and free kicks from our box.
It's a pity his transfer got wrapped up with WP's because, with another couple of years to go on his contract, I'd say Crouch has been great value.

I've watched since the late 70's and he doesn't even come close to the skill of Fuller, the clinical finishing of Sheron, the movement of Stien, the vision of Hudson, the commitment of Smith to name but a few. He's a good solid pro nothing more. In my opinion he IS one of the best players I have seen at Stoke. Stein a totally different player to him so cannot compare, Fuller magical but sometimes his attitude let him down, Sheron again a different type of player. Crouch has exceptional ball skills for a man his size I saw this in him as a young player at Portsmouth. Dennis Smith is my all time idol and too a man I judged as the best I have seen in red an white. As for Hudson yes he was absolutely one of the most skilful players I have seen at Stoke but my memories of he as a player have been soured by the drunken states I saw him in at the club he had in Newcastle many years ago and more recently in the pubs at Dresden. So as a professional he does not compare. Again thanks Crouchie you are a top all round professional. Crouchs international record exceeds that of any of the idols mentioned, that have played for Stoke, acknowledging that his England career has not overlapped into his time with us His best days are behind him, but as others have said he is an excellent role model at a time when high profile sportsmen and women are in the public eye all of the time Maybe we do have to thank Palacios for being part of the deal, Woodgate for persuading him to come to the club (he was rumoured to be joining Sunderland until the late afternoon of the final deadline day?) and the management and the board for taking the "risk" in signing a 30 year old It's not only his goal tally that have contributed to our successes, his role at defending corners / set pieces is a great asset too Worth every penny imo

Nobody moaned about Palacios at the time though and a few (including myself) actually thought he'd turn out to be the better buy.

Nobody moaned about Palacios at the time though and a few (including myself) actually thought he'd turn out to be the better buy. All we knew about Palacios was that he'd been a brilliant player for Wigan. We weren't privy to the results of medicals or any of the insider knowledge that the club must have had about his state of mind. Maybe he flew the medical, and Tone was persuaded by 'onest 'Arry that Palacios was over his brother's death. But from memory, there were one or two Spurs fans who came onto the message board and were laughed at for suggesting he was finished as a player. The fans had no reason to think we weren't just buying a dogs home job. The club should have known better.

Yes, it's strange how Crouch seems to find the net more often in a Stoke shirt

Abbey was worth £10 million Peter another 10, I've said before the impact they both have had on and off the field for us is just priceless. I hope he retires here as he embodies the spirit of our club, a true gent of the game a very rare thing indeed in this modern era.

Even with the Palacios signing being forced upon us, he was worth it. His influence at this club has taken us from a team routinely pinned on for relegation according to some pundits, to being a safe midtable team with aspirations of Europe.
He should be given a 4 year contract lol. At 34, why couldn't he play till he's 38? Teddy Sheringham played till he was 41 in the Premiership.

Yes, he's scored some crucial goals giving us some much very needed points, like most players he's had a bit of a rough patch, but maybe that was 'the system' in which he was playing

I "think" your point is slightly miss leading if you see the goals per season under both managers. Whether chosen to play or not they are quite similar He did well individually but the team struggled to score goals because Crouch was so isolated and we had no pace up front. Crouch worked miracles to score the goals he did in a role which he himself has pretty much said was a thankless one. We've seen the best of him under Hughes in my opinion. Him and Kenwyne Jones really.

Can't agree with the second bit though - his scoring record for Stoke is better than all his previous clubs bar possibly his one season at Southampton. Crouch is fast becoming one of our legends and perhaps even a catalyst for us being able to sign possible future legends such as Bojan. Absoutely worth every penny

Every single bit of it....But I think it was worth the money for raising the profile of the club, having an England international compared to our squad then must of at least helped attracting the players we have signed and are seriously linked with...

So we're agreed that he wanted both then? It's the idea that Palacios was just collateral chaff in an £18m Crouch deal that I don't buy. There's a fair few players he'd managed to get a tune out of when it looked like they'd hit the skids, can only assume he thought he could do the same with Palacios.

Anyway onto the topic in hand i totally agree with Metalhead. Peter Crouch is pure class, he's the complete professional in my book and im proud he plays for my club.
