Not wanting to sound cynical, he's also good for the brand of SCFC PLC

The christmas card with his long sock hanging up over the fireplace was genius.

He is and has always been a quality player. Well worth his price tag due to the fact that played in the right system he scores goals

Peoples opinions of Crouch's abilities are skewed by his size. If he was an average height with that goal scoring record, people wouldn't question £10m fees for his services for a single moment.

This is a non-question.
Of course he was worth 10 million.

The issue was never about what we paid for Crouch. It was the additional deal that Levy insisted on as part of the package which Scholes tried to stop, things got taken over his head and the rest is history. Do we know, definitively, that they were a banded pack? i.e. "You can't have one without the other" (D. Levy)
It's not Crouchy's fault either way.
That said, I think when we look back, he will absolutely be worth £10m, even if it was / seemed a tad rich at the time given his age.
(Plus Grapey will be on at some point saying he was 10 big PLUS add ons that he / we presumably met, so it might well turn out we paid nearer £12m.)
Equally, if - depending on the answer to the question above - we have to look at 18 big for the pair, then, given the contribution Palacial - loss has (not) made, you'd have to say, that it would have been the Spuds Chairman doing the cartwheels at the time.

He was always worth the money we payed for him, the problem was that we didn't have the players he needs playing around him. Crouch is quality, and quality doesn't fade as quick as pace.

The thing that grated with crouchy wasn't the price so much as pulis really didn't know how to use him . He looked poor as a loan striker , isolated and ineffective

It wasn't 10 million it was 18 million with a cart horse chucked in for free! Either way yes he was worth it! : ) Spot on.

Crouch is worth his weight in gold, never more evidenced than today. He will score 1 in 3 year in year out and I suspect is a must for the dressing room. Great signing.

Two ways of looking at it.
Over the course of his contract, undoubtedly. The man is a class act, one of the good guys, and remains the most reliable striker at the club at the age of 34. He's got us out of jail countless times.
On the other hand, had that money been spent in the summer of 2011 on either a striker better suited to the system or areas of the squad that desperately needed addressing, the rot may well not have set in and the previous manager may well not have lost his job.
Maybe everything's worked out for the best for everyone regardless.
