Starting to look very interesting in the final 12 games ( 13 for some) Assuming 6th is just a step too far, but who knows, we have a great chance of finishing 7th, have done a quick predictor and Swansea have another 19 baggable points, West Ham 17 baggable points, Liverpool 18, and stoke realistically 22, and that allows for a draw on the final day against Liverpool, I can really see that game being a 7th spot decider. The other teams have to play each other, Liverpool still in Europe and the FA cup, and as previously stated 7th spot could well be a Europa Lge Spot, if the FA Cup final is between 2 sides already qualified.

Hull H Everton H West brom A Palace H
If we get 9 points + from those games I'll start to believe you!
Just imagine what these season could have been if the Leicester, villa and burley home games had got us 4 points instead of 0...

Is it this season or next season that the FA cup carries no Europa spot for runner up, I read awhile ago it would now go to the next in the leaague

Can you imagine if we'd qualified for the Europa this season with our injury problems I think we'd be staring down the barrel. I think in its current state the Europa league is a poison chalice. They have to make it knockout for it to work. Just to many games in a league.

If Chelsea win the cup next week 6th gets a spot, an Arsenal v Liverpool FA Cup final might lead to 7th getting a spot. We lost our chance of a European tour last Saturday.

Only way to really combat Europa League issues for a team like ours would be to sacrifce the domestic cups and focus on it in my opinion but if we were to do that should we qualify it would not sit with the supporters

Yeah it does, personally I would put the kids out in the domestic cups if we had another season in the Europa league, unless we were consistently in Europe I think I could cope without the FA cup and League Cup journey if it meant we had a good crack at what is not too bad a run of games barring any surprise CL KOs

If we qualify anytime soon, I would happily sacrifice the domestic cups for a season for an all out assault on the Europa League, due to the winner being rewarded with a champions league spot.
boro and Fulham both showed you don't have to be a great side to get to the final of the Europa league. A decent draw and a bit of luck and a club like us could easily win that competition and entry in to the champions league, with all its prize money and exposure would be exactly what we'd need to move us on to to the next level

I'm sorry but 7th is too far for us, 8th is the maximum we can finish and with the season Swansea and West Ham are having that will be difficult. I'd be ecstatic at 9th again with more than 50 points.

We'll finish where we are now, a very respectable 10th gIven the strife we've had with injuries.

see also thread "Four winnable games..."
I believe there's a good chance, IF we stay healthy, to get 7 or 8 points from the next 4 games and 7 or 8 from the remaining 12. That's 50-52, which should be good for 9th.

The PL looks like it's in 4 groups at the moment.
Chelsea / Man City for the title.
Arsenal / Man Utd / Saints / Liverpool / Spurs for the 2 remaining CL places.
West Ham / Swansea / Stoke City for 8th place.
Everton downwards for relegation.
Which just leaves The Toon... and God Only Knows what they are up to.

I don't think seventh is on. We are in a mini-league with West Ham and Swansea for eighth place. Everton might join the party but the league looks pretty compartmentalised as it stands.

Looking at the tables from the last 10 years the points required to finish 7 th vary from 53 to 64 with an average at about 58 to 59. Looking at the points haul to date of the top 7 it may be 60+ points finish 7th this year.
That's 7 wins and 3 draws from our last 12 games - not impossible but bloody difficult.

Lets just be in the hat for next season and be thankful for it. We've had a dreadful season for injuries and 40 points plus would be a great achievement.
Had we had a fit side for most of the season we'd be on over 40 points already, but alas we haven't and we aren't.
Get to 40 points asap and use the end of the season to blood young Shenton in readiness for more games next year.

I'm hoping for a good summer transfer window, getting rid of the remaining deadwood and buying first team quality players. If we do that we will be set for a tremendous season next year. I would also take the opportunity to extend a number of contracts including Hughes. We would then have a very stable base to work from.
Makes me happy even thinking about it.

We would never win Europa league, as when the champions league losers join the competition I'm afraid they would be just to strong for us.
