Happy birthday Sir Stan!
I wish that I had chance to see you grace the field but unfortunately you retired way, way, way before I was born!
A true pro and role model who puts a lot of today's pro's to shame!

Happy 100th Birthday, Sir Stan.
Seeing you run on to the pitch with the rest of the team again for the first time after coming back to us from Blackpool was truly unforgettable for all of us lucky enough to be there - a momentous occasion, and one of the Vic's greatest-ever days.

Yesterday, 2 goals created by skill from our number 7 and the last goal scored by running in from the right wing.
A tribute by our players.
Happy birthday Stan.

Met him twice. Once at his life play at the New Vic in Newcastle and once behind the Stoke End stand.
Overawed wasn't the word.

My father and grandfather watched him before he went to Blackpool and I was fortunate enough to be at the Huddersfield game when he came back. The old film clips make him seem slow and rather obvious, but when you saw him in the flesh, even in his forties, he seemed to make time stand still around him while he did what he needed to do.

Good tribute to Sir Stan at end of MOTD2. 100 years ago a hero of our great game was born, he was a Stoke City legend.

I was at the Huddersfield game when he returned to us,and will never forget the reception he had from the fans. That kick started the revival of Stoke and led to promotion and in turn to those glorious 1970's. I was also lucky enough to meet and chat to the great man, a true legend and gentleman in every sense.. Thank you Sir Stan, You will never be forgotton

Never actually met the great man but saw him around the Vic a few times and I was there at his testimonial but don't remember much about it, too young.
My Dad met him at McGuinness's scrap yard of all places, said he (Stan) picked up a broom, started sweeping the place up whilst saying he'd found himself a new job :)
He also signed a photo for my son writing 'To my mate Dan' on it and gave it to my Dad, my Uncle (who knew him vaguely) asked if he could have one, Stan said 'sure, who for?' and my Uncle said 'Me!'
We're very, very lucky he was ours.
On Radio Stoke today they were asking who you role model was when you were a kid - he was mine even though he stopped playing before I started playing myself.

SIR STANLEY MATTHEWS CENTENARY
Stanley Matthews on the big screen - a selection of films charting the career of our greatest footballer and universal soccer icon in the centenary week of his birth by showing him in action
Sir Stan is seen captured on cinema newsreels from the 1930s through to his testimonial match in 1965. This is how the nation saw him. He himself gives insight into some of his greatest moments.
In collaboration with my colleagues Gary Kelsall and author Simon Lowe, we were privileged to record interviews with Sir Stan on more than one occasion, and moments from those interviews will be featured.
We also filmed tributes from soccer legends such as Tom Finney, Nat Lofthouse, England Manager Sir Walter Winterbottom, Bobby Charlton, Jimmy Greaves, Kevin Keegan, Brian Clough and Gordon Banks – featured in our official documentary video released with his biography in 2000. And see Archbishop Desmond Tutu enthusing about Sir Stan at the Britannia Stadium in 2008.
The evening opens with the big-screen premiere of the brand new animated film “THANK YOU STAN” – by international animator Tony White (Pink Panther movie title sequences etc.). This short animated film is narrated by Joan Walley MP.
Celebrate Sir Stan’s centenary with a night of dazzling soccer magic by the Wizard of Dribble caught by the cameras and shown again on the big screen.
All are welcome.
