I notice - not every game - that at the start of the 2nd half as the opposition keeper makes his way to the goal at the boothen end he often gets a little applause from the boothen end... Why is this done? I know Hart got this as did Green today.
I'd put this down to being an England keeper thing, but I'm pretty sure some teams who field foreign keepers get this too.
Can somebody enlighten me or am I miss interpreting this?

At the vic it used to be the keeper got clapped all the way up to the boothen then when he looked up to clap back the boothen would stick the fingers up at him. Far too politically correct now

Was the applause for the keeper or Clint Hill? I noticed he got a small round of applause when he came out second half towards the Boothen

I must admit I was surprised that people seemed to be clapping Green, then 2 minutes later telling him he was a cnut, with one of our less refined "supporters" even saying he was going to climb over and "twat" him ..... he didnt obviously, but im sure it made him feel better to have said it ;-)

I think when a genuinely decent keeper is playing for the opposition, they get a respectful clap, e.g. De Gea in the last home game. However today was definitely for Clint Hill. Green is an awful keeper, he made an awful attempt at saving Walter's first today.

Most keepers acknowledge the applause, Green didn't.

Applauding the opposition is completely gaye. Anyone doing it should have their arse handed to them on a plate.

Joe Hart started applauding the fans first a few seasons ago and gave his gloves to a kid in the crowd at the end. So he's always had a good reception.

I am pretty sure that the fans behind the goal have always applauded the oppo keeper as he took his place in goal. Then after that gave dogs abuse for the remaining 45.

Best reception I can remember for an opposition player was for David Seaman after his performances for England during Euro 96.Can remember him commenting on it in a later interview, saying how moved he was.

I remember Peter Shilton getting a very warm reception from the Boothen, when he played for Bolton late in the 94-95 season. A fair contrast to the abuse he got in the 80s.

I also remember Seaman turning round to the Boothen and applauding a particularly loud Delilah that game.

Far too politically correct now Aaahh the good old days !!!! And we also used to give a little round of polite applause when the enemy scored back then! (1960s/1970s) Yes - we did!
