That's what makes me laugh about this mb sometimes - red & white tinted delusion. I am not suggesting that we need or should sign Fletcher, but for some to suggest that Whelan is better is farcical. Fletcher has played for ManUre under Fergie since he was a kid, won the league 5 times, the FA cup & the League cup, and oh, the Champions League. Whelan has played for erm, Sheffield Wednesday.... I am not a fan of his, and do not particularly rate him, especially since his long spell out with his gut-rot - but to suggest he could not do a better job than Glen is just fucking daft. so...what you're saying then is that in 2010-2011 (the last season that he made more than 12 appearances in the league) he was quality so therefore he must still automatically be a far better player than Whelan? fuck it, on that kind of logic i think we should go all out for Bernd Schuster...he won shitloads of trophies!

Hilarious. His illness was well documented - does his lay-off mean he is now useless? He will most likely have something to offer - though hopefully somewhere else (if you have read my posts you will know I don't particularly rate him or want to sign him), and it is hardly the end of your career when you cannot get into ManUre's first XI is it? My point is to disagree with the knee-jerk one-eyed view that Fletcher is shit, Whelan is Zidane. Fletcher is not a particularly great midfielder IMO, but to suggest he could not do Whelan's (limited) job any better is frankly bollocks. It's all irrelevant as Whelan is a Stoke player - but if you were asked to build a team from scratch and you had the choice of these two to fill the role of breaking up opposition play and passing it sideways - I and possibly 90% of neutral fans would probably pick the more experienced (top level) and successful of the two. Just looking at it objectively like...

Younger than Whelan, prob more creative? Worth a 2 year deal, 3rd year based on games played? I would take either Darren or Steven Fletcher, rate them both to be honest

Ferguson use to pick Smalling too. And Wes Brown. Again, the same argument applies - If you take the away the fact that they most likely only play(ed) for England because they were at ManUre (and the obvious comparisons that Stokies then make with Shawcross), then you have named two decent centre-halves. Not world-beaters and would not swap either with Ryan, but if they were linked with Stoke I would not be displeased (well - not Wes Brown now obviously as he is too old...). It's hard - especially for most on here, but sometimes you have to take the emotion out of it and just assess the player fairly. We are living the dream at the moment but we are still not Real Madrid and have to cut our cloth accordingly. Nearly every player linked with us on here gets the standard response of "no thanks, he's shit", like we should be competing for Gareth Bale or something. Oh, and Fergie must have been clueless eh? ..but that is exactly what people are doing. You seem to be saying because a player played for a top team, was picked by Fergy, and won some trophies - he has to be better than any player we'd have. I've cited some players who if you strip away who they play for "and just assess the player fairly", then they are far poorer than our equivalents.
