Stoke beat West Ham at Old Trafford (fourth League Cup SF match). The weather was poor as was the pitch and apart from the joy of winning I remember having my wallet nicked (it only contained £1 - a lot of money to a 17 year old)but had my ticket firmly grasped in my hand.

Never seen so much rain, as the Gods wept for Wet Sham! But what a wonderful night that was.

Strewth, only seems like yesterday, I got thrown out 2 minutes before the end, out of the big cantilever stand, for standing on my seat. Twat of a Manc steward but what a great night that was. Seem to remember Pat Partridge the shite if Hillsborough was the Ref and he was grinning at the Stokies all night. Threw it down all night.

What a night.
I don't think I have dried out yet.
And surely it was only 10 or 12 years ago. Time really can fly by!

Possibly my favourite Stoke game. (A bit like the FA Cup Final, getting to Wembley for the first time ever just seemed to mean so much more than actually winning) The week around the game was quite interesting. On the Monday I developed a high temperature and lost my voice. There was no way I was not going, so for the next 2 days I didn't speak to anyone. I just grunted (I think everyone assumed I was just being a normal teenage boy! ) Fortunately my dad came to pick me up from school, so I was able to lean my forehead on the car window to cool down and I managed to convince my Mum I was fit enough to go. At the match, we were at the side of the Stretford End, near the corner flag, out in the rain and got absolutely drenched. The drama and excitement had to be experienced to be believed. I couldn't shout or sing, the only thing I could do was whistle! Next day I was really ill, but my Mum said that if I was fit enough to go to the match, I was fir enough to go to school. I spent 30 minutes in the classroom and then spent the rest of the day in the sickroom. Good old Bishop Bright, they really looked after their pupils. I spent all day chucking up without anyone enquiring as to my health, and it was about 30 minutes after school closed when a teacher came in and told me I ought to go home! On Thursdays I used to go to my grandfathers (down near Newstead Industrial Estate), I had missed the last school bus, so I had to walk. I have no recollection of the next 2 days (but I didn't have to go to school!). My Mum had the doctor out 4 or 5 time and by the end of the next week I had lost 1 1/2 stone. Not a recommended diet! I don't regret a moment!!

Truly awesome night. I think there were 49,000 and I suspect well over 30,000 were Stoke.
I had been at the first replay at Hillsborough - right at the back of the Leppings Lane - occasionally saw a glimpse of the pitch and little else. As a result, my dad took my brother and me in the seats - a gangway away from the Stretford End. Unbelievable atmosphere.
As someone pointed out above, one of the great, joyous awaydays.
(Didn't Micky Bernard take the penalty (scoring from the saved effort)? If so, how on earth was that allowed?).
