For me this has to be up there. The Sax is played beautifully, I read some where that the sax player was only paid £27 as which the check was bounced. This one too from Dire straights. I heard somewhere that his brother was in the forces and was killed in the Falklands and this song origional was dedicated to his brother.

I like Becks Bolero by Jeff Beck. Jeff Beck on Lead guitar, Jimmy Page on 12 string acoustic, Keith Moon on Drums, John Entwhistle on bass, and finally Nicky Hopkins on piano. Great instrumental by a dream, one off super group. What's not to like?

Would be a good shout for best instrumental, if it wasn't for the lyrics.

There were many Northern Soul instrumental classics from early 70s. Ramsey Lewis's Wade in the Water and Sliced Tomatoes by The Just Brothers were good at the time. Also I still like The Temptations Papa was a Rolling Stone instrumental version.

Albatross by Fleetwood Mac must be up there I would think ? Albatross certainly sold some records. Another from Fleetwood Mac - not 100% instrumental so maybe it doesn't count ( Pete Green was a genius) ...... It's pretty good for 1969 "Oh Well"

I heard somewhere that his brother was in the forces and was killed in the Falklands and this song origional was dedicated to his brother. Raphael Ravenscroft was born in somewhere in Stoke. He didn't like that sax solo as he thought it was flat! You are right - he was only paid £27.50 for the gig and the cheque did bounce. The record brought Rafferty £80,000 a year in royalties. Didn't do the poor bugger any good though. Ravenscroft died of a heart attack last year aged only 60 RIP Raphael
