So the Cookless England march into Oz for a nice little 3 way series as a warm up to the World Cup.
Fixtures:
Jan 16th - England v Australia at the SCG
Jan 18th - Australia v India at the MCG
Jan 20th - England v India at the Gabba
Jan 23rd - Australia v England at Hobart
Jan 26th - Australia v India at the SCG
Jan 30th - England v India at the WACA
A perfectly good barometer to see how much we can improve with Cook no longer leading the team in the 50 over game and a chance for the team to give us all some hope that World Cup won't be anything other than a complete unmitigated disaster.

Not sure the first game was much of a barometer.
Still, we posted a good total and quite a few batsmen got runs under their belt and the bowlers had a run out.
The game also maybe settled the Woakes / Jordan debate although I think that was pretty much decided. If either play, it will be Woakes who gets a game.
Looking forward to this mini series.

Can't see that score being matched. Friday will give us a better idea of how we are doing. But couldn't ask for any more though from the opening warm up games.

A big show by Bell it would seem , that coupled with a fifty in the first game seems to have him nailed on certain to be opening in the World Cup ? Hales must feel even more frustrated now .....at least his exclusion from the team can now no longer be attributed to the prescence of the former Captain at the top of the order . On a different note I see Trott is doing well for the Lions ....79 not out and 211 not out ....granted against a lesser attack , but it would seem that he is doing what was was asked of him ? A return to the fold for him would not be a surprise , in fact I'm sure that's what this exercise is all about ....when and where in the order for him ? Although I'm not sure about him opening , I would not be surprised if that's where he ended up ,purely to get him into the side ....that's for the future though and it may not pan out in that way at all , injuries and lack of form from other sources could hold the key to that .

The return of the Old Guard! Hales may feel frustrated but no one has a place by right. He should be reassured though by the success of Ali and Taylor - particularly Taylor who had to wait a long time for his second chance after his first international appearance. Also, that England appear to be rewarding good performances with consistent selection - witness Ali (again), Root and Butler. He should focus on making the most of his next chance which won't be long in coming I'm sure. As for Bell - he is a delightful batsmen. Maybe the most graceful Englishman since D I Gower. But for the past few series he has under achieved. So, great to see these good knocks in the warm up games. If he is on fire when the real thing starts we obviously have a much better chance of success. That is a big "if" though. Let's hope he delivers substantial match winning performances not those "flatter to deceive" knocks of 30 odd he has been producing of late. Trott is in a similar position albeit arrived at from a different direction. Another class player, and no surprise to see him taking second string bowling attacked apart. He is good. The question for him is can he do it on a big stage particularly against quality quick bowling. It's a question that, of course, can only be answered out in the middle. He's doing enough to make him a viable selection option for the summer, but he's some way back in the priority order behind Balance, Root, Taylor for example and of course Bell. The point though is, if we need him in the Ashes, he looks ready (or as ready as he'll ever be!).

Wow - just saw the reply 331 all out!
Good news is Broad did well. Also Woakes returned reasonable figures.
The rest - not so good! Jordan, going at 10 an over has bowled his way out of the side. The slow stuff looks, as you would expect, less effective than in Sri Lanka.
I reckon the 4th bowler spot is the one question the selectors have yet to decide. Meaning places 1-7 are know with the 5th bowler coming from a combination of Ali, Bopara and Root. Anderson and Broad will open with Woakes as an all rounder. So the final bowling spot will come from Treadwell, Finn or another all rounder (Jordan). Treadwell is the man in possession so it's his to lose - but he certainly can lose it if he doesn't show in Australia the same effectiveness he showed in favourable conditions in the last tour.

Just got up and, while things are still poor as far as posting a competitive score goes (we're 158 - 6 off 38 overs), but Morgan is doing very well; 76 not out
Interesting that Jordan made the team ahead of Tredwell.
Also, Anderson isn't playing which is a worry. Can't help thinking his injury is worse than they are letting on.
Edit; Ok - all out 234. Hard to see our bowling attack defending that score. But let's stay with the positive; a superb innings from Morgan; 121 off 136 balls. Just brilliant.

Davie and Watson are beginning to settle in. 1/70 in 12th over. It's looking pretty good. England need a wicket

50 for Davie. He doesn't look the best though. His running is a tad strained.
Have to say I quite like Chris Jordon. His run up is nothing to write home about but his delivery is superb at times. He must have enormous upper body strength. Who is this Ali chap?

2/100. Australia would be there earlier if it wasn't for Bell in the field. He's earning his corn after a first ball duck. A fine professional.

A well deserved 100 to Davie Warner. A great knock. BTW - some poor umpiring in this game. Is there no DRS in this series? England's bowling just isn't good enough. Finn is having a 'mare. Bowling far too slow. The all rounders just look no threat. Sure they'll pick up an odd wicket if two, but there is no sustained threat. Likewise the 5th bowler - which is to be expected. That's a heavy load for Broad, as the only quality bowler, to carry. Australia, on the other hand, look very good. Not sure why you are sticking with Watson though.

Congrats to Australia. Great victory - fully deserved the win and the bonus point.
England - not your day! You don't lose your first four wickets for 33 runs and win games. Well, not very often! What you need to think about though is the bowling. Big questions there.

What you need to think about though is the bowling. Big questions there. I haven't seen any of the game of course .....naturally feel disapointed with what seems to be a defeat in familiar fashion , Morgan's innings seems to have been a fine one though , I fear you are correct regarding the bowling , I've had the same worries for some time now .

Bowling from Jordan and Finn far too wayward. You can't give as many 4 balls away as they do in an innings it's amatuerish. Fair play to Woakes he seems to have found an extra 5mph of pace and you can't knock his line and length, he's making a case to become one of our test seamers as it stands....
