Obviously there's a bit of dicking around with his contract, but sooner or later we're going to have to start looking for a replacement for him. What a player, what a player for 500k! I don't think Cameron is the answer (although I like him) but I can't really think of anyone who'd fit the bill as a defensive minded grafter. We've obviously tried before, spending millions on Whitehead and Palacios. Who should we go for?

I think he will go in the summer as it'll probably his last chance to earn a chunk from a move. An incredible bargain when you consider we paid 10 times as much for Whitehead. Cattermole could be an option.

Jon Obi Mikel maybe. Not sure how realistic it would be but if he wants first team football then we could certainly offer it to him.

Cattermole would be a great replacement however Sunderland would simply never sell him, based on what I've seen when we have played Sidders and G-Cam there I'm not convinced we need him, enjoyed seeing more mobile box to box players there to be honest! Not to say Whelan didn't perform excellently, he did

He sounds very keen to stayHe's probably really settled in some leafy part of Cheshire and it'd be a wrench to leave. Surprised we're said to only be offering a 12-month deal. It's a fiddly situation. 31 in a few weeks and Cameron and Sidwell also competing for that slot. When all's said and done, I'd be surprised if another Premier League club offered him a better financial/chance to start package.

Actually, forget Mikel. It seems Sergi Roberto is back over for Christmas with Muniesa again He might as well just join his pals for good.

He's getting to an age where he needs to make sure the deal is right for him, so I can understand why he is taking his time. Having said that, I don't see him doing any better than his current lot. I wouldn't pull out all the stops on this one. I reckon he'll sign eventually. For now, the place is Cameron's anyway.

The way he has turned his career around in the last few seasons has been incredible. I can confess that I was not one of Glen Whelan's biggest fans in our earlier years in the Premier League, I saw him as the weak link and felt we needed a replacement but over the last few seasons he has transformed himself into a vital part of our team and has been one of the key factors in our progress.
I noticed at Anfield a few weeks ago a few of our fans moaning because Whelan didn't clap our fans when we chanted his name when he was warming up, that's Whelan for me all over, a model professional who is completely focused and driven by the task in hand and doing his best for Stoke City and that's the way all of our players should be.
He is without doubt our best defensive minded midfielder at the club right now and his 87% pass success rate makes him the most reliable passer of our regular first teamers as well, you can see why his style of play appeals to Swansea so much. Letting Whelan go would be a big mistake in my opinion, his form is as good now as it's ever been in his career.

Letting Whelan go would be a big mistake in my opinion, his form is as good now as it's ever been in his career. I've never been his biggest fan and I'd have let him go several seasons ago. I still hold to that opinion because (IMO)it was fair comment for several seasons. Since Hughes has taken over he's like a completely different player and he suits our system to a T. Based on his performances last season and when he's played this season, he has earned a new contract and I never thought I'd ever be saying that. The set up suits him much better now and I give him huge credit for the way he has made himself a key component in our team (once fit). I'd have no problem at all with a new contract for him. Well done Glen. If he DOES leave, I'd have to say that he cost an absolute pittance and owes us nothing.

We do not need him anymore, sell while he is worth something, he wasn't bought to play in the premier league, he was brought in to play in the championship, Geoff Cameron isn't the perfect option but he is far better than whelan

Our best player the last few seasons, was also good under TP but had to play as he was told, which some people can't see
the real captain on the pitch taking on that job when Delap went

Our best player the last few seasons, was also good under TP but had to play as he was told, which some people can't see the real captain on the pitch taking on that job when Delap went This 'playing the way he was told' stuff (under Pulis) could equally be applied to Walters, Shawcross, anyone who ever played full back for us and every midfielder that ever felt the inclination to go forward and create. They could only be judged (at that time) on how they performed within the rigid system we operated. ALL of those players were capable of better and some are now proving it.

Whelan is one of them players who isn't the most talented but will run through a brick wall for stoke city, why anyone would like to get rid of a player like that is beyond me.

Our best player alongside Shawcross before he got injured and now some fans say he isn't worth a new contract.
I despair sometimes I really do.

Thought we missed a bit of a Whelan in the midfield two today. N'Zonzi and Cameron were lazy and lightweight.

Thought we missed a bit of a Whelan in the midfield two today. N'Zonzi and Cameron were lazy and lightweight. Both looked at each other several times as if to say. "Oh, I'll get it I guess." Game needed a Whelan or Cattermole type for us. Adam on attacking before the 80th min was nice change though.

Really thought Sidwell was coming good before his unfortunate injury! Anyway I don't think Cameron or Whelan are too bad options there, but tonight the opponents simply were a number too big for us.

I agree with you that tonight we really struggled to string passes together, but in general I think this a position where we have OK options. Luckily we don't meet Chelsea in every game!

Your right. I like the "options" we have with Sidwell, Cameron, Whelan, and Nzonzi they are all very good imo just depends on the other side who starts for me tbh. Unlucky yes, I supposed facing world class players wed miss some challenging passes but some of those weak or nowhere passes did my head in. Arghhh.
