Looks really tight in the bottom half of the league at the half way stage (nearly!)
Only 5 points separating 12th - 18th.
We need at least 4 points from this next 3 games

Second half of the season usually sorts out the men from the boys. It's when the promoted or half a season wonders tail off and the sides with the biggest squads get stronger.

We have a thread like this every year and every year a number of posters say that it will take more than 40 points to survive. Only once has 40 points not been enough to survive - when West Ham were relegated with 42 points.
I've seen nothing this year to suggest that 38 points or less won't be enough - just as it is most years.

Well Burnley currently occupy 18th and the final relegation position with 15 points from 17 matches.
That is an average of 0.88 points per match.
If they keep that up for the rest of the season they will finish on 33.44 points.
On that basis 34 points would be safe but you would probably want 36 to be sure.
That feels about right to me, 40 won't be required that's certain.

Easily. There's as much garbage down there this year as ever.

Some of the teams down there are going to struggle to get to 30pts let alone 40. We have 3 games to get to that magical 20pt mark by the half way stage and would hope that we can get the 1pt needed to get to 20pts in those games: You cant bet against us when we play the bigger teams and West Brom and Everton are not in magical form at the moment, so it would be disappointing not to get at least 1 pt from those games, anything more than 1 pt leaves us with less to do in the 2nd half of the season.

I think that it all depends whether or not we fill the corners in.

36 will be fine. We will easily surpass 40 anyway. Just had injuries, a bit of bad luck, and Bojan took a few weeks to get going. Second half of season will be much more consistent.

With almost half a season gone , then it looks more likely that 34 points should be enough but as we all know nothing is certain at the half way point.

Blimey theres some miserable buggers around.......we should be working the other way around and planning on how to beat last seasons total not worrying if we're gonna get to 40. Thats the relaistic measure of progress, not pant wetting about getting to 'the holy grail' Jesus hates christ!! (We'll be fine - dunna werrit)

40 points will be plenty.
37 will be sufficient in the race for survival.

The same question is asked every year and every year 37 points has been enough. Dont see why it should be any different this time round. We should be safe by 30 matches this season.

Dectech also known as 'The Times Fink Tank' do a statistical analysis updated regularly including every Tuesday. I think 36 points is about the going rate but they have us on about 50 points and in 11th position.

There's no way Leicester or Burnley will get 40 pts unless TP is persuaded to take over at one of them and even then it'll be a tall order. That leaves one place and unless Big Head Bruce turns things round they won't make 40 either. If anyone seriously thinks we will get involved them I suggest they go to the bookies as you can get 16/1 on us to be relegated with Ladbrokes.

As it stands I reckon 35 / 36 will be enough this time around.
