"He's a snake, a gay snake, not to be trusted" - Malky Mackay on an official of another club For some reason this Malky text message made me chuckle. Is it homophobic abuse? What if the official referred to was actually gay, then it would just be the snake bit in doubt which is surely just regular abuse, unless the official's sexuality was not strictly relevant in this context. Of course Malky may have meant gay in the old sense of the word, a happy snake!? Hell it' a complex area It's not really complex though is it? If he's said that, then he's using "gay" to emphasise the insult, which is where the problem is, regardless of whether his target is actually gay or not. The syntax is the same as the use of "black" in front of "bastard" which everyone, apart from a handful of absolute numbskulls, understands to be wrong for exactly the same reason. If someone is a snake or a bastard, they don't need their sexuality or race to be added as an emphasiser. To do so gives the message that being a snake, well that's bad, but a gay snake...fucking hell, that's a far worse type of snake. The only context in which that comment would be acceptable is if the subject literally was a gay snake. As in, a male snake that bums other male snakes. Quite what Malky Mackay would be doing in a situation where he's called on to recognise the sexuality of reptiles though, I have no idea...

Isn't this all about a one-eyed trouser python? That's two people in this thread who associate penises with gayness.

I do think Mackay would be a great character in a play. Born to a world of certainties in Bellshill in North Lanarkshire fortune has tossed him in to a situation he is trying to make sense of within his own limited horizons. He sees deception everywhere he looks, gay snakes waiting to catch him out in the bushes, jews out to rob him blind and hell even the breasts 'falsies' are not real. In the end I suppose you would have to say he harbours old fashioned sexist, homophobic and perhaps racist views and that's a crime, but its not the only crime in the world and, whisper it quietly, it may not even be the worst crime. Not good but not unredeemable!

Not good but not unredeemable! It's a world that many of us who grew up in the 1940's and 1950's will recognise. Seems strange now but it was largely based on ignorance;growing up I had never seen someone who was black except in films or the good old National Geographical which was standard "biology" education for boys. No one ever mentioned homosexuality either. The innocence of pre-internet youth.

A Spitting or Swallowing Cobra? H That's an asexual thing, H. Well, I think it is. I've had a couple give me a BJ 'back in the old days' and I never axed to get under their skirt first to check. The mind boggles what you do when you're pissed up. Especially in Brussels with Winger and The Mogul and The Maximator. M.
