I remember being in the supporters club opposite the Vic when it was recorded - definitely before the League Cup Final. Often wondered if, as we were on the recording, whether we should get royalties. "smiley thing".

I'm pretty sure that it was in the run up to the final. Didn't Chelsea bring out "Blue is the colour" at the same time.

It reached highest chart position (34) on April 2nd, a month after the final so that would suggest it was after?

I have the Trent record and it only says 1972 on it Had a report that it was recorded 2 weeks before the Final and reached 17 in the charts. The final was 4th March 1972. so that would put it at end off Febuary, Any one verify this for me.

It was before the final. Have it and the follow up single which Banksy sang/spoke ('We'll Be Together' - ?)
Use to work in the musical instrument business where I worked with Darren Hatch, Tony and Jackie's son, himself a brilliant instrumentalist/songwriter. He use to entertain me with brilliant stories of coming home as a kid around this time and finding the whole Stoke City first team in his house rehearsing words!!!

It was definitely out before the final (4.3.72) as it was played and sung at Wembley. It also was released before the Chelsea song. Given that it was the end of January almost (26.1.72 I think) before we won the epic semis against WHU, then it must have been released in February. Hope this helps.

Ok, I haven't got the date but have looked at some books I've got: stoke's greatest games by simon Lowe and David lee; match of my life stoke city; Denis smith's just one of seven, and they all say it was recorded after the semi final win and before the Wembley game; I also seem to remember the first home match after the win, people were walking around the touch line selling the single in a push to get it into the top 30?

Houseman Osgood Hudson McCready ?? Spot on. Makes me feel old ! Always thought that Houseman was underrated and reason I remember Eddie McCready is that I always though he looked like Micky Dolenz for some odd reason

The fact that both clubs released cup final songs in the build up shows you young 'uns what a big deal the League Cup was in those days. It always seems rather twee that we harp on about it, and it looks rather silly in the light of how it has become diminished as a trophy in the last thirty years, but it was a special achievement back then. It also seemed to herald the promise of even better things to come. I think that's why my generation still cling onto it; it was the pinnacle moment of a halcyon period in the club's postwar history.
